I wonder if in baseball, the football referee's have control over the entire playing field? If so, the officers are under the direction of the officials, and there was simply a miscommunication and understanding.

I'd be willing to bet the cops were giving the refs a hard time.

We manage the playing field, the officer's manage the crowd. If the referee's did not like the way the police officers were handling their job, then they should take that up with game management, not direct the actions of the police. We have no place telling anyone how to do their jobs, we hate it when people try to tell us ours. They handled the situation badly by getting into a confrontation with the cops.

 

All in all, not handled well on anyone's part. I would expect better behavior from both, as we both stand for control and order in the midst of chaos. We shouldn't contribute to it in any way.

That statement is BS. That may have been what the referee said, but the cop wasn't all polite back. No way... I'm guessing the referee told the cop to back the crowd up, the cop didn't like being told what to do, they got into an argument, and the cop wouldn't drop it... That's really what it looks like to me at least.

 

I don't like that the game continued though. If I were the other three officials, I would have backed up my partners... And in high school, these crews stick together. They're friends usually.

When you have the power of arrest, you don't need to argue, all you need to do is handcuff. So, my procedure is to leave crowd management to school staff and the police. I will stick to game management. If I was a cop and a game official tried to order me around I would tell him to stuff it. That's not the game officials job, I suspect the cops are hired by the school, so they take direction from the AD or principal.

I am a football official (HS and college) and we have the ultimate control.  We can stop the game until we deem the situation to our liking.  Eventually *someone* will get those people out of there or the game will simply not continue.

 

One thing I wouldn't do is argue with police officers.  You never know when you're going to run into a "Respect my Authoritah!" type and I have no desire to end up in jail over something like this.  Get the AD, tell him what needs to be done, and stand back and wait until it's done.

Agree 100%. Ask them, stop the game and let the AD deal with. I will not get in a pissing match with cops.
