Yeah, Someone once told me, instead of not making the call that you don't like, call the heck out of them and make everyone else not like them too.

It's too bad our boy Hoye didn't get an assignment... I wonder if that blown fair/foul call a couple years ago in the playoffs is still haunting him.

I respect the sacrifice these guys make to get to MLB, but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.

And should stand up in front of the class at whichever school is attended and make the same statement to all the instructors and students. Should be a shoo in for a job and maybe UMP45 can go watch this meteoric rise to the top (lots of MiLB near by) just like Bellino, starting as a fill in by 2019 and full time by 2022. Should get 70 games in 2019, worth about 90k by then and then a full schedule of over 100 games until full time which should be about 140k-150k to start, sounds sweet to me.

 

Because we all know only the best of the best are selected to work at the major league level, right?   :rolleyes:

If they weren't the best in the business MLB would hold an open tryout once a year. You'd be first in line right?

Sure I might disagree with someone's judgement, but I'd never call someone who could umpire circles around me terrible.

I will agree with Central Ohio.. they are all not the best... I have seen some college umpires who do a better job.. I have personally seen guys and worked with some in the MiLB's who are not the best, but cause they went to school, were good enough to make to the next level...

 

Alot of really good umpires cant take the time to go to school.... sorry it is what it is.

I agree that there are some very good college and HS umpires that could have done well at school but for whatever reason didn't go. There are some very good MiLB umpires released every year because of no movement. I know a guy that did several years of MLB fill-in that said there were other guys that were as good and better than him. He said he was lucky to have a good day when the right guy was watching. He was unceremoniously released because of no openings. There plenty of excellent umpires that are not in the show but the guys that are there are pretty damn good. C.B. has been called out in this thread. He makes most of his calls correct. The problem I see is he is not a good handler of people. He either doesn't look assertive enough when discussing calls. He had a couple of gross misses late in the season but it's certainly not a recurring theme. Angel is another that announcers and players bust on. He is actually pretty dang good. The problem with Angel is he will make an unpopular call. With the call for IR, the days of neighborhood calls,the quick pull by F3, the "expected call" are all gone. There are going to be some very upset people when the IR bites them.

Unless everyone out there picks one thing and we all go for it, we can never have the best of that one thing. So, that crap reason laid out about **just**umpire school as an excuse and pursuing it doesn't wash. It's the same excuse for anything then and not just umpire school and trying to be a MLBU.

Well, the problem is MLB won't take anyone unless they have been to umpire school.  In fact, I think Jim Evans might have even been the last one they took before making that standard.  Not sure about that but I believe it was right about the same time he got in. 

 

That is why the school excuse comes up.  Other professions don't all require that.  It was an arbritrary decision with the best intentions of getting the best out there.  But, it doesn't work that way since it is hard to get to the school due to finances or any other reason.

 

So, the MLB gets the best available at the time of an opening.

 

What I would like to see is a stat of how many calls are correct (using IR I know and it isn't fair) for the ones which are close to call.  Then, we would get a much better idea of who is really good and who isn't at it.  It's easy to get about 90% of the calls correct.  Most umpires do b/c in that 90% are the really easy ones which can be called from the next state over.  Getting to that extra 5% or more is the difficult part.  Maybe even 93% is the easy part and getting just 2% more separates the descent from the best in the league at the time.

The problem for CB isn't that he misses a call here and there.  It just seems that he has a bad habit of stringing a few of them together either in the same game (which I know we have all done) or through several back to back games.  Then, as media does, he gets singled out.

Let me get this right... I don't say those guys suck, never have... I will say "ok, he missed it".. but heck we all do... those guys put in a ton of work, gave up family time for 8 months a year, staying in ( at the early levels) crappy hotels, crappy baseball.  Do i have my favorite umpires? Of course I do, do I have some I don't of course I do. But I don't and never will say that some one sucks, cause Those guys are really good. It's just like in college baseball, I have seen some guys work and I shake my head, but there are guys who are just plain awesome.

Yep.  I don't think Bucknor is in the top half of MLB umpires, but he could still work circles around any of us on here.  None of these guys "suck".

Most other professional occupations do.  There are people who could be great doctors or attorneys that never get the chance because of family issues, finances, health reasons, or whatever else.  The door to get into MLB is extremely narrow, but the schooling isn't very expensive relative to other professions that pay as much as MLB umpires make.  

 

I'm not saying I particularly love the system that is set up now, but it isn't like it's a complete mess.  They get competent, professional people to work their games.  I do think they could improve it by implementing some of the ways of the NFL and NBA.

There was (still is in MLB) a good reason for the neighborhood call at 2B. I hope it is pointed out to managers that if umpires lose discression on this kind of play because of IR challenes, then MLB needs to take responsibilty for additional (NFL type) collisions to follow.
