My partner walked to 2b for that?

18U summer tournament game.  Batter I guess let go of his bat as he swung and it hit my partner in his shin guards.  The PU called time to walk to second base, where the BR ended up, to tell he that he would appreciate that he didn't throw the bat next time.  HC came out to meet my partner at the plate to see why he was talking to his player.  Coached just smiled, laughed and walked back to coaching box.

 

Am I crazy for thinking this was a waste of time and was an unneeded gesture to walk all the way out there?  Have never seen a partner do that in 15 years,.

Seems over the top to me.  Maybe he's been clobbered in the past and is sensitive to it?

Two thoughts.

 

#1 - Personally, I would have waited until the half inning to mention this to the player.

 

#2 - There's a possibility that your partner needed to walk it off, and simply chose to walk out to second base and kill two birds with one stone.

If I needed a walk, I probably would have walked to the teams dugout, and had a word with the coach. That saves the "why are you talking to my player?" issue (which BTW I hate coaches who say that!). I may be old school, but I can talk to anyone I want to, when I"m on the field, and they don't have to like it one iota.

In 18U, I wouldn't do that. I may walk to the coach and give a team warning if it is acceptable in the rule set and necessary... Anything 12U or below though, I'm ok with walking out to him... Putting the attention on him in that situation, emphasizes its importance and hopefully helps him remember to drop the bat next time.

Speaking of rule sets, what does OBR and FED say about throwing the bats? Warnings then ejections?

OBR, nothing. Depending on the circumstances, it could be interference if it hinders a fielder or USC. FED, you are correct.

I never talk to the player...I don't want to take them out of their game when it was clearly unintentional....But I will talk to the coach during the game when I get the opportunity to tell him or her they  really need to work with that player in not throwing the bat. It's amazing how many times a coach had no idea the player was doing it....Or at least, so they claim.

I had a player who continuously threw his bat, even when he got into college ball. Had a catcher duck and I took the brunt of it when the kid got a single. I grabbed the bat, ran to first base with it and dropped it at his feet and told him to stop hitting me with his bat. Coaches loved it. Laughed their asses off. Didn't really care if they did or not. I wanted to keep the player in the game and at the same time get my point across. Mission accomplished.
