R1, R2 0 out, FED Rules

Routine fly to F9, R1 strays too far.  F9 throws to F4 throws toward F3 but misses and the throw goes into the dugout.  I call "Time!".

I send R2 to home and R1 to 3B (yes both tagged).

Coach comes out to ask about the award.  He said throw by F4 is one base.  I correct him and say "2 bases, TOT". He asks again, then says OK.

As the discussion is going on, I'm thinking TOT or TOP ( no difference in this situation).

Just checking myself here, the throw by F4 is "second throw by an infielder?"

I have no reference to back me up, but once F9 makes the play on the batted ball, there can no longer be a "first play by an infielder."  TOT.

The applicable clause is the last sentence of FED 8-3-5:

"For any subsequent play by an infielder or for any throw by an outfielder, the award is two bases from the time of the throw."

No.  The throw by F4 is the first throw by an infielder. ;)

but as others have said, that's not relevant.

The only time its TOP for an infielder is if its the first play attempted and it happens to be by an infielder.

R1 and R2, less than 2 out. Sharp ground ball hit to F6. F6 attempts to tag R2; reaches out with ball in glove and bare hand, and either tags R2 or misses him. R1 reaches 2B, then F6 throws wild to F3 and the ball goes out of play. Assuming he's not out on the tag, R2 scores, and so does R1 because he legally occupied 2B at TOT. The tag attempt is a play.

This is different from a look back or a feint throw. R2, ground ball hit to F5. F5 looks R2 back to 2B, then throws to wild to F3 without looking, not realising that BR was too quick and had already reached 1B, and throws it out of play. First play, therefore TOP, therefore R2 scores and BR is awarded 2B.

Just attended a training course and clarified this exact situation with us.
