i had a HS JV game on Friday, ... rivals i guess.

i had a bang/bang play at FB and banged the BR out.. as the BR passed me, he looked straight at me and 'shook his head no', and said.. "no way" while passing by..

when cleaning the plate after "taking his 5", i told the F2 tell that BR if he did that again, i'd give him a formal warning and he should mention it.  (i wanted to do this the easy way for this problem.. as i had ejected his coach in the 2nd inning.)

at the start of the new half, that BR came right up to me stuck out his hand for a shake, and apologised saying: "i'm totally sorry sir, it won't happen again, i was just frustrated".  to which i said, "thanks for coming up.. i appreciate it."

i thought it was a nice gesture.

If the runner just said "no way" quietly on his way past I think you overreacted.

I don't. He didn't even actually warn the player. A lot of people here (possibly me, HTBT) would have told the runner "That's enough." after that exchange.

Well considering this is a one man game, I hardly don't think he overreacted. I am honestly amazed that you guys do one man in JV games, the only games that are one manned around here are coach pitch.

it was a defiant "no way"..

since i had tossed the HC in the prior inning, i decided to play it in an 'out of the box' way.  that way the only people who even knew about it were the BR, F2 and myself.  it worked just the way i wanted it to.

by him coming up and sticking out his hand, he's showing me that hes a man and deserves respect.  and i showed that, by my response to him.

If that is all that happened, this would not get any reaction out of me in any games I work.

With that said, if you decide to warn him, do it immediately when he says it.  Don't warn him through other players.  Handle your business yourself, not through the player's teammate.  If you do decide to warn for something like this, I think a "That's enough, cool it" would be plenty.  That's just me though.

Oh, and the HC being ejected is irrelevant to this situation.

Me, in this situation?

"yes way, he got you by 1/2 step" (...or whatever....) and let it go,...if he continues, then he'd get a 'that's enough'....

many of you would be shocked at the level of ball that we work w/ one umpire up here!

Are we all becoming ONE MAN Whores.

Everyone loses on this.

I have only done this when my partner shows up late OR not at all.

Is there a way to stop this?

What is next?

This upsets me.

It's regional and a fact of life.  Without getting political, the ACLU isn't helping by preventing schools from requiring parents to pay a fee to cover the costs for sports.  There's a smaller pool of money available, and many schools have been forced to drop entire freshman or JV programs, so going to one umpire is, frankly, the least of their concerns.  We don't have middle school ball at all here, but there is a ton of travel ball.

In SoCal high school, everything below varsity is one man.  There is a private school league where varsity is 3 man, but they can require parents to pay, which covers these costs.

Thanks. Bad trend. Wife and 2 sister inlaws are all retired teachers. The whole education system is getting worse. Most school administrators could not last 2 weeks in te real world.
