OK, stupidity alert, and I am the stupid one. First I will whine and build my defense. I did 4 games in 19 hours which is far beyond my exaustion ability. 2 games Friday night, one field and one plate that went 10 innings. Saturday morning 10 AM field and then noon plate appearance. The game was 15 to 13 in the 5th. walk, walk, walk, single, runners were on every inning, bases load or R1, R2 or R2 R3 every second. Then it happened.  2 men on, 1 out  and me by myself. I tap myself on chest to remind me of IFF.  After a passed ball with no throw, runners on R2-R3 I stepped behind the catcher and the batter popped it up and I yell "Infield Fly, Batter is out!  Ohh, My bad, forget that!!"  I kid you not, I said "My Bad, forget that." Rookie, rookie mistake.  Coaches all laughed, and runners didn't move. Need to get it out there, so I learn from my mistake.

I've seen worse. When there was an easy play at first base the umpire called the BR out before the 1B caught the ball. The first baseman did not catch the ball and the umpire called him safe. Afterward the BR overran the bag and the 1B picked up the ball and tagged the runner out. So the umpire went, "He's out no wait SAFE   um out?"

The famous safe signal and out call is a mechanic practiced by many of the youth umpires in my association. This is in addition to calling the runner out when he's halfway down the line and the second baseman is still bobbling the ball. It's then followed by an "oops!" and an out signal with a safe call.

Its always when you're the only umpire. Calling the game from behind the mound - per the league's preference - close pitch on the inside edge. I'm bringing my hand up to hammer the strike when I realise it was off the plate and turn it into a head scratch and call "ball". The weird part was that every single person at the field saw through my cunning deception of my confusion and indecision.

 

Oh and when I say "only umpire", I mean the "only umpire actually umpiring the game". The assignor was there with one of the teams; you guessed it with the defensive team who just "lost" a strike. He'd already had a tongue-in-cheek go at me for wearing my pink shirt for Mother's Day. I'd donated my fees from that day's games to two family members who went in a 60km fundraising walk for breast cancer.

In Australia, we're so much more advanced that we're actually in the future. We just pretend to be in the present to stop the rest of the world feeling slow.

 

I prefer the notation of one year rather than 13/14 or 13-14, and given that most of that season will be next year, I pick that year to use.

Australian beer commercials do tend to have much bigger budgets than others, and the last Fosters campaign I remember seeing (back in about 2000) was good and Aussie as. I'm pretty sure Fosters is Australian for "outsider" or "foreigner".

I don't understand this. The only reason a league would want a single umpire be behind the mound is the steal at 2B. While most of my cohorts will be happy to take their money for without putting on the plate gear, I only remember one instance of the teams wanting the umpire behind the mound and it was about the 2B steal. Perhaps they got burned and were focused on that particular play. If they think the inside pitch is a reason to go behind the mound then just go behind the plate and widen the strike zone.

Leagues that insist on one man garner no respect from me. Insisting on being behind the mound is lunacy and means they are run by guys with no clue or respect for what we do. It is also a league I will not work for, period. I called a couple of scrimmages from the mound when I was coaching. You have absolutely no clue on balls and strikes, no clue on many HBPs and absolutely no look at fair/foul. It sure gives you a good look at the steal at second. MORONS! I would be shocked if the same leagues don't have must slides and balk warnings.
