Warning, ranting post.  Had a malicious contact ej in the first scrimmage game (sanctioned) of the year.  The ensuing is the crap that happened.

Why are coaches still arguing about ejections for malicious contact?  The rules clinics and rule book is very clear, umpire judges it, the player goes.  I am sick of these crap arguments.

Also, they need to learn that it is always the thing enforced, even if the other side screws up.  Ugh.

Thanks for listening guys.

So what happened???????

Don't leave us hanging brother.

Player gets in a rundown between 3rd and home, catcher blocks plate, player slides feet first, but with his upper body, shoves the catcher in a malicious matter.  Easy call. Coach goes to standard stupid arguments.

There's MC

There's not MC

There's maybe MC - as it's in the eye of the beholder which can differ even among umpires,  you're gonna get discussions some times.

Rich, my rant is not about a coach asking what I saw.  It is the argument after that.  MC is a judgment call, umpire judges it, out and ejection, end of story.  I will tell a coach what I saw, but after that, it should end pretty quick.  It is the crap excuses like the defense was obstructing, or he is a good kid, etc.

I always loved,"He's the nicest kid on the team." Well he just laid the catcher out so he is gone. A buddy of mine dumped a kid a few years ago for crashing the catcher. His manager insisted he didn't do it intentionally. After the game he came off the team bus to further his argument. The kid steps off the bus, walks up to the umpire and says he was sorry, he was just trying to knock the ball loose. Coach dropped his head and got on the bus.

So the coach went on report too, right?  For approaching an official to argue in the parking lot.

Had an HS game last night. Runner slides into catcher but is tagged out. Yes, there was contact, but runner slid feet first. Some idiot  parent was yelling at me to get ride of him because he has to slide. I normally do not respond to fans, bu tin this case, I couldn't help myself, I responded, "He DID slide." He and a lady next to him informed me that he, in fact, did not slide. At this point, I walked back to my position behind the plate, telling myself, "People, I don't know what game you're watching." And I left it alone. Stupid, stupid, stupid. BTW, defensive coach never said a word.

not only is responding to fans something you should'nt do, but it also opens you up to ridicule from everyone else.  This happens because they see that they got to you, and it will continue ....and if a supervisor is there or evaluator, it's sure to show up in your assessment

Had another one a coupel of years ago in a Babe Ruth game. Visting team nudges out to a 15-0 led in the top of the first inning. Has a runner on third and one out. By some miracle CF actually catches a fly ball, By another miracle on the same play, throws a perfect one-hopper to the catcher. The catcher turns to face the runner in the base path and is literally waiting on him. Runner chooses option D and trucks the catcher. Here comes the immediate MC call. Since they had no subs and could not finish with 8 players, the game was forfeited. First, coach argued he tripped over the plate (that he never reached); then he said he didn't mean to. Then he appealed to the district UIC who informed him he didn't see the play and even if he had it was strictly a judgment call and there would have been nothing he could have done any way.

I have yet to meet a coach who agreed with an intereference, obstruction or malicious contact call that went against his team. Tehy all need to grow up and get with the program and stop making excuses for these kids of all ages. They're not doing them any favors. All they're doing is teaching them it's never their fault and it's always somebody else's.

Hmmmm..... Almost as stupid as an umpire responding to fans' comments about his call.

Ya know, I come on here to share experiences and read other peoples war stories and try to be helpful. I have not insulted anybody or been a jerk to anybody about what they post. As I said, I don't make it a habit to respond to fans. In fact I don't remember anotehr time that I've responded to a fan during an HS game. Should I have said anything? NO. Did I make a mistake in doing so? Yes. But I don't need to be called "Stupid" by somebody who doesn't know m or anything about me beyond what I post on here. I happen to be a damn good umpire who takes the job seriously, knows the rules and works very hard to make the very best call possible on every pitch and every play. I would put mu umpiring skills up against anybody's any time. Apparently UmpJM. you consider yourself to be the God of umpires who is perfect and has never done anything on the field that you regret, whether it be a call or the way you handled asituation. Good for you! More power to you. From where I'm sitting you're an arrogant ass. This is supposed to be a fraternity and we're supposed to have each other's backs. Instead, I find myself pulling knives out of mine.

Whenever something happens that a coach doesn't like, he will usually flip open his coach's manual, and go down the following Bi**h List:

1. "It didn't happen". When that doesn't work:

2. "He didn't mean to". Moving on:

3. "Well, they've never called it on us before." Finally:

4. "We;re just here for the kids:

Whe he gets to #4, you know he's out of bullets.....

Where did he call you stupid?

We all do stupid things. Doesn't make us stupid.

Post 13. Yes, talking to fans is bad, we all know but occasionally something is said and you react. It happens, we kick ourselves in the butt and move on. I tossed a coach for telling me he was tired of me calling two zones. He had been chirping and I told him it was to stop, that's when he got dumped. I went to get water outside the gate and his fans were complaining I tossed him for no reason. I was fed up and I told them that he got tossed because he told me I was cheating, by saying I was calling two zones he meant I was cheating him by giving the other team a better zone. Completely shut them down, then a discussion started among them that they never realized that was interpreted that way.

Should I have done it, no, but I pulled it off. Could it have blown up on me, absolutely. Sometimes it better to be lucky than good.

Wmm, I've had your back since I read of your improper base award, your failuure to check on a ball OOP, your arguing on the field with your partner, your wrong interp of rules, and now your explaining a bad situation to fans. While you may have much promise, I seriously doubt you're as good as you think you are. I'm still in your corner. All of us have room for improvement. I highly recommend you spend some $ and go to a quality camp/clinic. Also, put your nose in the rule book. A ball OOP is dead regardless if a DT player is trying for it or not. ALL RULE SETS. Don't stop coming here just because Yoda gets your hackles up. If it's this easy to get your goat, how quick is your trigger on the field? Relax and just umpire. :meditation:

I think you ran him off. He hasn't been back in about a week.

IMHO it could have been handled better.  There was no need to call his admission stupid. We learn from our mistakes and there is positive, yet fair ballbusting, ways to accomplish it.

Jocko,

That was certainly not my intent.

I thought I was just being "courteous, impartial, and firm".

Hope I didn't hurt his feelings.
