Finding a New Association when Moving

OK, so the situation is that I will be graduating, and the way it looks right now, I will not be located where I am located right now when I find a day job.  I still do not know where that location will be, but am looking for general way people find their organizations. 

 

In the past, I have happened into them.  When I was in Wisconsin, I was recommended to an association that trained me and told us who the assignors were, got in with them, and I got games.  When I got to Iowa, I emailed high school ADs and they either gave me games directly or gave me their assignor's name and even got me hooked up with an organization.  So I got games.  When I got to Virginia, I emailed the VHSL, they told me who was the high school commissioner in my area, I contacted him, and through those organizations, I found other assignors to keep me busy through that.

 

However, I am trying to do it very quickly this time, as this move will be in the summer, and I would love to be able to put out feelers as soon as possible to possible assignors and organizations. So how do you find these, as doing a Google search does not always provide useful information.

A couple things that you can do until you have your final destination is assemble an umpiring resume that you can give to the new assoc. Things like any clinics you've gone to, the games you've done, what level those games have been (varsity, travel, JV, youth, etc). Also, solicit some letters of recommendation from past partners, assoc. leadership, etc. When you do figure out the target associations, these will help introduce you to them.

Yea, I think so. I don't have a sample readily at hand, but one of the standard Word templates for a chronological resume would probably work. You could have a section for "EDUCATION/TRAINING" listing the classes and clinics in bullets, maybe highlights of other things - have you ever volunteered to work some cage work or scrimmages without pay to get extra experience? Worked 3 man without pay? Those would be interesting bullets. Then an "EXPERIENCE" section highlighting games and level worked. If there are any extraordinary items, could list them as well. Depending on recipient, could have an objectives section, though I'm not a fan of those for actual job resumes.

Not sure about other states, but Missouri (MSHSAA) has a whole section of their Official's Manual on their website for with a listing of all of the "Certified" officials associations in the state along with contact info... most of them anyway (Springfield area has two. One's on the list and one isn't). As soon as you know what state you're going to, the state assoc. might be a good place to start to see if a similar list is offered.

What kind of ball are you looking for? High school? Travel ball? Pony? LL? Adult? Also, where you move will likely have a major effect on who you should contact. Here in SoCal, HS is assigned by one person per unit (Orange County unit assigns umpires for several thousand games alone. There is also a Long Beach Unit, LA Unit, Inland Empire unit, etc) In other areas of the country, games may be assigned through multiple individuals that have relationships with the schools. USSSA is all though one guy here, but there is also AAU, Extreme Diamond, SCS and other competing travel ball organizations - each assigned by a different person. Pony will likely be a different person for each league, and LL will be a mix of all volunteer leagues and some where they pay umpires. We also have Mickey Mantle, Connie Mack, CCYB, etc which are assigned by different guys.

 

Basically, there is an assload of baseball in southern California so the guy that cut you off on the freeway this morning might just be an umpire assignor. It may be completely different in the Midwest or Mid-Atlantic.

I currently call High School, Travel, and some Rec (Dixie ball here in VA).  That is what I would be looking for in my new location.  And that is why I am asking so early, because while I would be too late for high school this year except for 1.5 states (Iowa does all summer baseball/softball, Wisconsin has some schools that play summer baseball), it would be in the swing of Travel/Rec season and would love to jump on that ASAP when I move.
