John Bonham - Led Zeppelin

Steve Smith - Journey (no, not for his Journey work so to speak) but this cat is truly amazing

Mike Mangini - Dream Theatre (this guy is mind blowing!!)

Alex Van Halen - Did some really innovative cool stuff but still a "slap you in the face" drummer!

Simon Phillips - He can do anything, but played with Toto and Jeff Beck back in the day

Danny Carey - Tool ... I don't like Tool, but he's ridiculous!

Neil Peart - Rush, .. an amazing drummer, but moreso a great 'drum part arranger and writer' that could also pull it all off with ease and class!

 

Then you have your basic SOLID BACK_BEAT drummers and/or have showmanship:

Tommy Lee -  Not a great drummer really, but PERFECT for the Crue, and an amazing showman!

Michael Derosier - Heart (70's) totally solid!

Simon Kirke - Bad Company - solid!

 

Other mind-blowing talented drummers:

Vinnie Coliauta - Sting (most popular artist you'd know)

Dave Weckl - Studio drummer, fusion wizard

Virgil Donati - studio, fusion, ANYTHING ....this guy is a magician!

Thomas Lang - anything ... mystifying coordination!

Speaking of 80's metal, y'all remember that movie "Heavy Metal?"

Who woulda thunk they'd put out an R-rated cartoon!!!  I got to see it when I was 12 and only 'cause my buddy and I fooled my mom into thinking it was "just" a cartoon movie about music and the R-rating was for language!     You could probably see us blushing even in the dark when the chicks (yes, chicks...this is an 80's dominant thread!) got naked, but the cake was the one who got it on with the robot!

Anyway, back to the music...I'll never forget the score from that movie and still have it to this day...Sammy Hagar, Stevie Nicks, Cheap Trick, GFR, Journey and several others.  Matter of fact, gonna play "Veteran of a 1000 Psychic Wars" by the Cult at my fast-approaching retirement!

Those were some fun times. The club scene, the concerts...Ahhh, Confessions of a misspent youth  .The sheer volume of music that was being put out back then was amazing.

And almost all with 3 chords.     Cat Scratch fever.  A B CC. A B C, A B CC C B A and repeat. 

No denying that. 80's metal was more about having a good time and the energy than complex music.  Though I always thought Ted was a underrated guitarist. There's plenty of talent in the rock world. I was also a big progressive fan...ELP, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Joe Satriani....And my favorite these days...Dream Theater.
