I am about fed up with this crap about football being too violent!  if

you are worried about getting hurt don't play!!!  Everyone that has ever

played the sport knows there is a chance you may get injured, it is a

chance you take...

We don't have boys. but if we did, and they wanted to play football I

would have no problem with it.  Should we not let our daughters play

softball because they may get hit in the head with a pitch while

batting?  Should we not let them play basketball because they may get

their legs taken out when going in for a layup?  I believe the life

lessons learned by playing sports heavily out weigh risk of injury.

The President thinks someone needs to look into the NFL because it is getting too violent... how about someone looks into the X Games!  This last weekend a snowmobile rider crashed while attempting a stunt and is now in the hospital and it does not look like he is going to survive.  I bet that more kids take trips to the emergency room after attempting stunts on their bikes, after watching the X Games, then they do from playing sports.

I am not attempting to turn this into anything political, but doesn't our President have better/bigger things to worry about?

I think that all the awareness about head injuries the last few years has caused a knee jerk reaction from everybody.

IMO, hits that target the head in contact sports should always be penalized severely. However, if a guy is coming across the middle of the field with the ball and his head down in football or cutting across the blueline with the puck head down in hockey and they get laid out by a shoulder to head check / hit that otherwise would've been to the chest, tough luck. The hit I describe in minor hockey in Canada is now a 4 minute penalty. Last I checked, its 2+ a 10 minute misconduct in the US but I'm not sure. No idea if football flags headshots that aren't helmet to helmet.

The real long-term danger to this sport isn't the spectacular but relatively rare massive hit, it's the repetitive subconcussive hits that are endemic to the game. That's where the latest research on CTE and long-term damage seems to say. I don't how you could ever reduce that risk. In 20 years, I'm not sure high school football survives, at least in anywhere near its current form. It sounds crazy to say it - but boxing used to be the country's 2nd most popular sport and look where it is today.

Frankly, I'm not all that upset that my kids aren't playing, and I love the game. But I don't know how much of a future it has.

Solve the whole proble in one fell-swoop.

LEATHER HELMETS

Think about it. If it hurts, they won't do it.

This echos my thoughts almost exactly.  I grew up playing football (with several concussions to boot) and officiate it now. If I had a son, I'm not so sure I'd be thrilled with the idea of letting him play.

As strange as this sounds, I think I'm starting to lose my taste for football and this is a major reason why. Between my own concussion experiences and seeing too many young men suffering concussion type injuries, it's become a lot less palatable to me.

Wait till we have games postponed because both catchers take a hit in the mask and there are no more catchers. Same with umps. It's comming. Solution--more kids learning to play catcher (there seems to be a dearth of them anyway, anymore--they hate to get hit with a foul ball--also seems to be the quickest way to the bigs other than pitcher if you got the tools and can hit). Working a 3 man umpire crew, even at the HS level, or a lot of 1 man when the partner takes a hit in a 2 man (no more base only umpires). Everyone is giving those base-line tests in NF. Should be giving them to all umpires everywhere also.
