HS scrimmage today, using 3 man, CCA Mechanics. I am U1, in A. Runner on 3rd, 1 out. U3 in D. Line drive, base hit between F6 and 2nd base. What is the correct rotation, using CCA mechanics, even though a HS game.

Will tell what happened after some feedback.

U3 will come into the middle of the diamond and take any play at second and third. U1 (you) would rotate into foul territory and take the touch at first and any back pick that happens. PU stays home and takes the touch of home.

What BT said, except PU has 3rd base responsibilities after he watches the touch of home.  It's the same rotation as if there were no runners on.

(R3) and (no runners on), on a ball to the outfield, is exactly the same situation as far as rotations go.

this is the old rotation--now the PU stays home and you pre game to rotation as BT said or you can have a reverse rotation and U1 comes in and take batter-runner into second.

I always beleived it was...

- U1 took the touch and any play at 1st

- U3 takes the touch and play at 2nd + 3rd (if not called off)

- PU takes the touch of home, and then, if time permits and he thinks he can get the best angle, can call off U3 for third with a vocal "I've got 3!"

- U1 watches and listens for PU's move, and if he takes 3rd, U1 comes in for the plate.

I've been wrong plenty before though.

My guess is that U3 went out, U1 stood there because he thought U3 was coming in and PU went out to cover the play at second.

BT is spot on with the current CCA mechanics. Even if U3 went out, it would be hard to believe PU went out to cover a play at second. U1 may have been slow to come in, but I'm sure once he realized U3 went out, he would have come in.

Hey... I got something right. Personally I kinda like the reverse rotation idea. Think it would look better.

I think I like your original mechanic better... A button hook (like in the reverse rotation) takes more time and may not put U1 in the best position for the play at 2nd... It also leaves U3 doing nothing on 98% of these plays

Bringing U3 straight to 2nd gives him plenty of time to get set and make a good call and also gives all three umpires a responsibility on all scenarios.

BT Blue is correct.  There is no rotation on this play.  U3 comes inside, U1 has all plays at first, and the PU stays home.

The only times you rotate in CCA mechanics now are with no runners on, R1 and a base hit, or R1 and R2 with R2 tagging and advancing to third on a fly ball to the outfield.

You don't want U1 coming in and taking the BR to 2nd here because he is chasing him.  U3 is ahead of the runner, which is preferable.

Well here is what happened, PU did stay home, U1 (me) did stay and watch the BR touch 1b, unfortunately U3 stayed at 3rd (did not go out) and NO ONE had 2nd.

In post game, U3 kept trying to say it was my repsosnibility at 2. I am the new guy in the Association, so I took my lumps. PU also tried to say it was U3 responsibility, butnhenwas not having any of it.

I was fairly certain I had the correct rotation in mind, but as the newbie and certainly new to the new mechanics, I wanted to check with those in the know.

So checking another play. R1, no outs. I am in A, U3 in C. Base hit ground ball through the infield. My interpretation was I have BR through 2B or back into 1B and U3 has R1 for the touch at 2B and any play at 3B. Am I wrong here? I was told I was.

PU and I had a good pre game. U3 was there but was later and then was not very interested in the pre game. Candidly I think he was a little taken aback that I was new to the Association.

Again, in post game, PU and I talked about a lot of plays, but U3 just thanked us and left.

Never mind on other play. I actually have the touch at 1B and then head up towards home, as the PU is supposed to rotate up towards 3rd.

Your key on this as U1 is you commit to home when R1 commits to third. Reason being that when he commits PU has him into third, U3 can now slide over and take BR, and you have anything at the plate.

Another thing I love so much about working threeman is that the rotations are absolute. There is no "if he goes" options like in twoman

This is the most commonly missed rotation in 3-man.

Right.  This is the CCA mechanic as of 2012, where the PU stays home with R3 or R1+R3.  It's on page 172 of the 2013 CCA manual.

Had a very similar question on my fed state test. R3, 3 man. U3 goes out. What is the rotation? Having only my rule book with me during the exam, I guessed (incorrectly). I have only worked 3 man a handful of times, and what I was "taught" wasn't correct, apparently.

This one's pretty easy if you just remember that when an umpire goes out, you revert to 2-man.  U1 pivots and takes the BR to second.  PU has the tag of third and the play at the plate.

Not trying to be a smarta**, but do you guys have CCA manuals since you use CCA mechanics?

I think thats a great question because the issue could have been resolved right then and given the disagreement at least one of you needed to learn something.  Plus its a way to have the learning takeplace without it seeming like the young guy is trying to show up the older guy.

BT!  Thanks for reminding me of the new rotation.  Was told about it last fall and had forgotten it.

It is a bit odd for me to have PU just stay there, watch the touch, do nothing, and then if for some reason BR goes to third, we have U3 chasing the angle a bit.

The whole point of 3-man is to always have someone in front of the runner.  Wonder what was so difficult about PU watching the touch and having another 10 seconds or so to get to third base.
