Legal or illegal appeal

Defense wants to appeal the BR missed 1st on the way to second. Before the appeal was made PU had called time to clean plate. Before PU puts ball in play they do the typical get on the mound/rubber, step off and throw to first. Would this be considered an illegal appeal since time was not in or just nothing since the ball had not been put back in play? And if it is nothing, then they can still attempt an appeal, correct?

Its nothing and the appeal can still be made

Appeal must be made before a play or attempted play, pitch, IBB, etc. None of those things can occur while the ball is dead. Anything that DOES happen while time is called means zero. Put the ball in play and appeal away.

In Fed all they have to do is ask during a dead ball. OBR is nothing, let them reappeal.

In OBR if the pitcher balks while attempting to appeals it negates their ability to appeal as well (included in trouts etc)

No never call time at any level. Unless you are working solo.

For the really young levels I do. It might be smitty but it's better than having to deal with the aftermath of some 8 yr old

I don't know about you but I'm not keeping the ball live when I turn my back to runners on base to clean the plate. To much crazy stuff can happen.

I never call Time to clean the plate unless I am giving my catcher a chance to recover from something.

BUT... in a scenerio such that you have a runner on 3rd, you are now cleaning the plate, the pitcher is sort of just milling about (not paying attention) while you clean the plate, and R3 9or any base for that matter) sees the pitchers inattention and decides to run home... couldn't that cause a problem?

I'm always looking to do things the right way.

If you don't take 10 seconds to clean the plate, you won't miss a thing. And, if you wait until all action is done, you won't miss a thing. As with calls, it is about timing. Do it quickly and at the appropriate time. It has nothing to do with level of ball but everything to do with timing.

I did this until my HS evaluator put in his comments, "Don't call time just to clean the plate."

Little things make lots of difference.

I am an old fart and I was taught to call time, younger guys don't. I saw it blow up on one our A guys two years ago. He went to clean the plate, R3 took off and he was almost in the middle of it.

You may get a possible out on a pickoff.

But by all means like I said before if you are working solo then call time.

Saves time. Nobody is standing around waiting for you to get ready and put it in play. Doesn't prevent the offense/defense from making a play. Sets a much better tone for the game in general. Less idle time means more play time.

I was told by and Evans graduate at a clinic not to draw attention to myself by calling time when I clean the plate.
