Doesn't the ball have to be in fair territory when touched by the mas to award the 3 bases?

OBR 7.05b

Three bases, if a fielder deliberately touches a fair ball with his cap, mask or any

part of his uniform detached from its proper place on his person. The ball is in play

and the batter may advance to home base at his peril;

Just realized that 7.05b does't apply since the ball is dead because it is a foul ball

MLBUM 5.9

Any defensive player deliberately touching a batted ball over foul territory that, in the umpire's judgment, has an opportunity to become a fair ball with detached equipment will entitle all runners - including the BR - to advance 3 bases from the time the ball was touched without liability to be put out. The ball is in play, and runners may advance beyond the awarded base at their own risk.

So, while D is not immediate dead ball, it is still a 3 base award if the ball has an opportunity to be fair.

And, while I agree C should be, unless MLB changed their position on this, it is not an immediate dead ball unless the call affects the play. If it has no bearing, then the play continues with no reference to the call. I may be wrong and MLB changed or made an addendum to it which makes C correct. But, based on a play which happened several years ago, this is how MLB chose to handle a situation like C.

If it is still true, then the answer is none and C is only true if the call affects the play. All are delayed or not at all. If it isn't, then C would be my answer though I would be trying to crawl under :home:.

The question was 3 bases or 1 base for the touch.

And the original question was "is it dead"

The interp is basically saying "assume it's fair".

Judgement on the fair bit. "Dribbling" toward fair territory makes it kinda iffy in my book so I'd have to see it first.

I haven't seen anything that would change the "if no one reacts" interp.

@JaxRolo:

See and you thought writing questions was easy..

Notice you never defined the rule set either.

:D

True.

But it still gets people thinking.

Using OBR. :P

Had this question on the NFHS test yesterday. At work so can't look it up now. Anyone know the ruling for this in NFHS?

There was a similar question about C using his mask to stop a pitched ball that was scooting away. Thanks.

In FED the catcher touching a pitched ball with his mask is nothing, in OBR its 1 base.

I emailed the FEDS for a clarification on this is here is their answer.

"A fair batted ball will be 3 bases if touched....A foul ball will be a thre base award if the ball is touched with the detached equipment "IF, IN YOUR JUDGEMENT" the ball has a chance of becoming fair!"

So there you have it. This is FED rules. I don't know if there is a difference for OBR.

In FED touching a batted ball with detached equipment is 3 bases

touching a thrown ball with detached equipment is 2 bases

and touching a pitched ball with detached equipment is not defined in the rules.

In OBR touching a pitched ball with detached equipment is 1 base.

RE Jax's situation quoted above: Nope, same ruling, near identical wording in the PBUC manual.. Section 6.9, 3rd paragraph. It's in the MLBUM somewhere too but to be frank, I'm too lazy to look up the specific section right now.

Two bases on a pitched ball in FED, One in OBR.

My quote came direct from one the FHSAA rules interpreter.

From the Fed rulebook:

TWO BASES (batter and runners)

4. *#Live thrown ball or pitch touched by detached player equipment which is thrown, tossed, kicked or held by fielder

i don't know what to say about your interpreter but the rulebook is pretty straight forward.

This is also in the FED Book.

ART. 3 . . . Each runner is awarded:

a. four bases (home) if a fair ball goes over a fence in flight or hits a foul pole

above the fence, or is prevented from going over by being touched by a

spectator, or is touched by an illegal glove/mitt or detached player equipment

which is thrown, tossed, kicked or held by a fielder;

b. three bases if a batted ball (other than in item a) is touched by an illegal

glove or mitt, or by detached player equipment which is thrown, tossed,

kicked or held by a fielder, provided the ball when touched is on or over fair

ground, or is a fair ball while on or over foul ground, or is over foul ground

in a situation such that it might become a fair ball;

This pretty much confirms what I was told.
