Not only did he give Pedroia a really long rope, he gave Valentine one too.

Pedroia was the 2nd out in the bottom of the 8th and gets tossed the 5th pitch in the top of the 9th, I'm guessing a good 3-4 minutes later. Pedroia is still being a little whinny prick. Nauert did all he could to keep him in the game when most of us would probably agree he should have gone a long time ago.

Then it appeared Valentine was trying to be tossed but Nauert didn't give him that pleasure.

I'll defer to Gil, but Nauert is not known as a one who tosses a lot of people, and I can't think of any time I've seen him toss someone off the top of my head.

If anything I'd say Nauert gave them both too much rope, but that's just his style.

Warren, I couldn't agree more!

You can go to Gils' site (closecall.com) and they have forums etc (comments section) about each EJ, might be interesting. Prepping for a meeting now, but may get a chance at lunch to see what others had to say.

Pedroia should have gone after his at-bat ...he was just whining like a school girl!

AND YES, ...I love how Nauert kept BobbyV in the game! :D

Yep. Definitely looked like a case of "If I have to stay out here and watch this then so do you."

Here's Valentines story after the game:

"I was watching," Valentine said of his concern Pedroia could be tossed. "I wasn't expecting another play, you know? There was a play, and [Pedroia] made an innocuous comment and he got thrown out. It's not like he went out on the field and was yelling at him the whole time. He stayed all the way from him, he stayed totally away from him. Then Bres throws that pitch, and he makes some comment and gets thrown out. Whatever."

Valentine was animated, too, but he was not ejected. Pedro Ciriaco replaced Pedroia at second base.

"I was pretty angry and supporting my guy and probably said more to [Nauert] than I said other times I've gotten thrown out," Valentine said. "And I don't like staying on the field that long, [with] my pitcher on the mound, too."

I know a lot of guys like the white under black, many college groups do it, I hate it. Then you add the necklaces and Armstrong bracelets and it's a ugly combination. I don't understand players with all that crap, certainly not on an umpire.

I'm surprised he let it go as long as he did, plus I would have dumped Valentine too.
