Hey all,

My name is Ryan M. I'm an umpire in Las Vegas and was hoping to join the ranks of plate coat umpires. Unfortunately living in Vegas doesn't give me many chances to wear one, so investing $300 in one seems tough. So I thought I would throw a post up here and try to see if anyone could provide any advice. Thanks for any help you guys could give me.

Ryan M

I too am in the market for a plate coat, I'm saving up for a Gerry Davis coat. But being for MO might be a little easier for me because the spring and fall can get chilly. MajorDave, a member here has informed me that they are the best coats out there.

1. Gerry Davis 2. Honigs 3. Fescheimer

^ That the order of quality that I've been told. That's also the order of price from highest to lowest.

I'm sure someone with plate coat experience will either confirm or correct me later.

Anything else you want to know?

Why spend $300+ on an item you'd hardly ever wear?

Instead, use that money on a good clinic. That knowledge gained will take you farther than any piece of equipment/uniform.

Cripes.... 2,000 posts. I'm well past my shelf date.

.

Because it's cool.

Because if you get a nice, used one, you can resell it later and pay nothing for it.

Chicks dig the coat.

I dont quite agree with that ranking based on my experience. I have a navy Fechheimer that I bought about 5 years ago and have seen a Honig's plate coat in person that another association member has. I can tell you the Fech is of a MUCH MUCH higher quality than the Honig's coat.

plate coat is the way to go!!!you start with pants from Sears, black work boots--move up to combo pants with black sneakers--move up to base pants and plate pants--good plate shoes--etc,etc,etc,go with the plate coat if you are not worth it who is???

Fechheimer plate coats in black and navy $250 from all american sports:

http://www.allamericansportsshop.net/shop.php?app=ccp0&ns=splash

That's the bluest looking black material I've ever seen. (views of the Regular and Long) The only pic that actually looks black is the 'Short' coat.

And oddly, Fechheimer's own website doesn't even show that they sell (manufacture?) plate coats anymore... just heather gray trousers under their 'Umpire' section.

I've had several plate coats over the years, and they've run pretty darn close to my suit coat size, 42R. If you don't know what that is, slide down to your local Sears, and try on a few sport coats. Plate coats run big, so you can get your gear underneath.
