I was watching a varsity playoff game yesterday. 3 man crew with a Pac12 guy on the plate and a D2 guy at U1. With R1, there was a hit to the outfield and they are rotating. PU goes up to third and U1 comes home. No play anywhere and as U1 was returning to A, he purposely kicks dirt on what was a nice, clean plate. There were about 10 association umpires watching this game and we all got a kick out of it.

What have you done to mess with your partner?

I'm constantly throwing meaningless signs during the game to make us look cool and usually to "befuddle" my partner. I also use a shiny metal indicator when im on the bases, and use it to reflect into my partners eyes when the opportunity exists.

This one diamond I work games is right down on the lakefront, and there is a large pedestrian path that goes behind the backstop with all kinds of hotties walkin, biking rollerblading, etc..When I'm PU my partner is constantly flashing me meaningless signals to turn and check out the hot babe walking behind me. I'll turn of course. Its good for a laugh.., but it sometimes gets on my nerves cause he'll do it at a pressure moments in the game and won't stop until I turn around and look!!

I used to work with a legendary, extremely rotund black gentleman on a fairly regular basis (at least several times a year). Anytime either of us get nailed with a foul ball or a direct pitch, the one on the bases chuckles and laughs uncontrollably at our partner in pain. I remember one particular game where I got nailed in the collar bone in my useless +POS Joe Brinkman model CP, and after I got up off the ground, he just busted up laughing at me, holding his belly. Thanks!

In turn I would do the same while his in PU, but wait until it is a LARGE woman who is dressed skimpy... that will teach him.

I worked two games this weekend with my roommate from when I was at JEAPU. During at least one game, we threw so many meaningless signs into our normal signals that coaches were probably wondering what the heck we were doing.

Kicking dirt on the plate let's him know you made it. If you are working two man and the BU goes out, if he makes it to the plate he shows the PU a Captain Morgan.

My UIC was umpiring my sisters softball game once. There was a foul ball that was tossed in and he made a shoelaces catch with his mask (I know, I know, unprofessional and all that, but w/e)... I gave him an "ooh!!" and started clapping... He turned around after the next pitch and pump faked throwing the ball at me. :P :D
