I was watching the Tigers - Rays game last night, and was surprised to see Gary Cederstrom behind the plate when it was Marty Foster's turn? And, the U3 didn't look like Foster.

Was it Foster's vacation/time off? Is that how it works, ...when it's your time, you're done, and they bring in a fill in? If that's the case, I take it they dont' throw the fill-in at the dish first day, and they start over on the rotation starting w/ the crew chief?

Just wondrin .....

Anyone?

ON EDIT: Just saw that Manny Gonzalez was called up ....so, I guess they -restart- the rotation because last night should have been Foster's/Gonzalez plate day .... if this is wrong, someone correct me.........thanks

I was under the assumption they continued their normal rotation and the call-up guy jumps in there.

I would think that too, but ...it's not the case I guess, because he should have been on the plate last night then ..unless, there was something else involved....

Marty was in a car accident on the way home from the game Tuesday . Driver of another car had a heart attack at the wheel and ended up hitting him. Not terribly serious for Marty, but bad enough to sit out for a few games as a precaution. He should be back relatively soon.

Manny only has a few games under his belt, so they put dropped him in at 3rd. Crew cheif can place the call-up guys anywhere in the rotation they want when they join a crews - he doesn't necessarily have to take the same spot as the guy he's replacing.

Manny will travel with the crewto their next site and get his shot behind the plate on (I think) Saturday.

I read somewhere that call-ups don't get the plate their first night. It was a while ago, and I can't even remember where I read it.

It looks like Vic Carapazza and Alan Porter are getting some decent call up time too. Not bad for your first year as a call up.

In Baltimore right now, with Hirschbeck and Bell out, Tichenor, Hoye, and Diaz are working a 3 man.

It was written somewhere that there "might" be 4 retirements at the end of this season. Brian Knight, Angel Campos, Mike Muchlinski and Todd Tichenor, from the Pacific Coast League seem to be working pretty steady. Scott Barry, Dan Belino, Mike Estabrook, and DJ Reyburn from the International League seem to be working pretty steady.

"IF" there are 4 retirements next year, it would be a good bet that the 4 will come from this group of 8. Mr. Knight pretty much has one position locked up. So, that means they need to get 4 others with some games under their belt pretty quickly, for next years "call up" duty if those 4 retirements become reality. There could be other retirements over the 5 years of this new contract. And who knows, with retirements after that. In 2015, West, McClelland, DeMuth, Davis, and Welke will all have 30 years in the game with Welke being the youngest.

1. Crew Chiefs shall decide the rotation assignments when a new umpire joins the crew.

2. It is "suggested" that a substitute umpire who joins the crew from MiLB start at 2nd or 3rd base.

3. When a substitute umpire who joins a crew from another Major League crew, consideration should be made of the substitutes last plate game.

4. MiLBU should not start behind the plate when joining a crew from the MiLB.

5. Also for DH or split DH, MLB will use its best efforts to provide a temporary umpire. The temporary shall not work either game on the plate. If a temporary is used, the ump that works home plate in a game should not work the other game of the DH.
