Guys, ...

Open bottom jackets are as follows, correct??

Smitty's w/ the black/ white stripe

Honig's w/ the black /white stripe OR navy w/ red white

YES?

There's probably more than that, but those will be the easiest to find.

I have the Smitty's Black/White but haven't worn it since I got some long sleeve jerseys to wear on the plate last spring. I've not worn this jacket on the bases, I've got a "closed bottom" Navy/Red & White stripe jacket that works much better for that

With long-sleeve winter weight compression wear and my Douglas underneath it, I have done games down in the 40's with the long-sleeve jersey and been comfortable, Much more freedom of movement than a jacket too.

Thunder,

I have the Honig's K17x jackets, and they come in Navy w. White & Red or Black w. White.

If you get a K17P it is designed to be a plate jacket and will have an "open" bottom.

If you get a K17B it is designed to be a base jacket and will have an "elasticized" bottom.

I have a black "B" and a navy "P" and I wear both on either the pate and bases and always tuck it in.

Aren't all jackets open on the bottom?

How else would you get them on if they were closed? :rollinglaugh:

JM,

thanks for this, great response. I too have a black K17PB (polo blue stripe) that is an elasticized bottom that I've tucked and worn out....so I guess it doesn't matter.

If you want our jacket to be versitile, take any jacket with the banded bottom, have your local seamstress remove it and put a drawstring at the bottom. Now you can tuck and untuck with ease.

I don't have any elastic on any of my jackets. They're cut longer and make it easier to tuck.

johnnyg, ...did you have what Fittske suggested done??

p.s. thanks Fittske!

Since it is no longer a popular practice to wear a jacket behind the plate and since it is no longer a popular practice to tuck a jacket in on the bases, the open-bottom without the drawstring option is about to be a thing of the past.

The +POS that I sold to a lucky Empire regular had the drawstring to make it a sort of convertible tuck or don't tuck. It was perfect. I only tucked it when I had a partner who tucked. The new Majestic full-zip is the answer, because it is designed not to be tucked.

KFINN,

True, also, since you can easily tuck an elastic bottom jacket....totally open isn't as logical.

With a 52 degree day, and 35mph winds, ..I don't care what you have underneath you, ...a LS jersey ain't cuttin' it, period! Trust me, I tried it on Sunday, 3 layers plus the Honigs LS....

I have the quality +POS in navy, but on a moderate cool day, ...it's TOO WARM....so I'm looking for a lighter navy (MHSAA required) jacket I could tuck .....

I am retiring my Honig's "plate" jacket after this season. I purchased it 3 years ago with the open bottom and a pocket on the front for use behind the plate. I HATE this jacket. It is not warm on cold days and it holds all of your body moisture. It's like wearing a plastic sweatsuit from the 80's that we used to use to cut weight during wrestling season. Well, I never did since I wrestled Heavy Weight :meditation: All I do is sweat and freeze with this thing on. I am going to a therma-base type warm up shirt under a LS shirt behind the dish if it's cold. I am also moving to the therma-base jacket or the Cool-base jacket for the pads depending on the temp. Hopefully I can keep warm and dry using this setup...

The TOP umpires in Minnesota wear jackets on the plate.

The trend has not hit flyover country yet. I will continue to do so, while respecting the rest of my peers throughout the country who choose not to.

Fashion trends seem to hit the east and west coast first...so by probably 2020, I will not be wearing my jacket on the dish.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a jacket on the plate. If it was so taboo, MLB umpires wouldn't do it.

There is nothing unpopular about wearing a jacket on the plate or tucking in a jacket on the based as long as you are getting your calls right.

I don't mind a Jacket on the plate but I have never liked a tucked in Jacket. It is not natural!!!! Personally I have never ever tucked in a regular Jacket when wearing street clothes.

And will only tuck in an Umpire jacket whit a partner that really insists on it.

Here's some fun trivia: Of all 67 regular MLB umpires, can you name the three who still wear a striped windbreaker behind the plate?

There's nothing wrong with it at all in my view. I usually wear a long-sleeve behind the plate and an un-tucked jacket on the bases. I will tuck it in if a partner prefers to tuck it in. (I have worn the new Majestic cool base convertible behind the plate, because it's almost like a long-sleeve shirt.)

But the fact remains that each is still an increasingly unpopular practice.

Jacket behind plate: tucked if it extends past your belt. If not, untucked is fine.

Plate Coat: better yet

Majestic convertable: ugly. Looks like a dentist or barber smock. Give me a Smitty pullover any day. That's a sharp jacket.

I wish the Smitty's didn't have the stripes on the shoulder. Saw a guy with one the other day...Didn't like the look at all. I really don't like the one's with the silly stripe around the body...Honig's has that one..

Posted

You mean stripes on the shoulders like the ones used in Major League Baseball? I think that's the reason they put the stripes on them, because it looks professional. I like a jacket that says "umpire" when you see it.
