JR High Game, I'm PU. Bottom of 6th-2 outs, HT Batting, down by 1, Runner on 2nd. Batter just nubs one and it goes maybe 6 feet down the first base line, stays fair. I'm on the line watching the Fair/Foul and the catcher fields the ball and DRILLS the Runner between the numbers as he is approaching 1B. BR is probably 2 feet in Fair territory and about 10-15 feet from 1B when this happens. For some unknown reason I don't call anything. As soon as the ball hits the runner, I get back to the plate to wait for a potential play if R2 decides to come home. Funny thing is, about 10 seconds after everyone stops running, I start telling myself "Oh S#!T, you're gonna hear it now!!" Not ONE PERSON said a word about it. No coaches, parents, players, anyone. :wow:

Thank goodness the next batter struck out on 3 pitches so the result was the same either way!!!

I talked to my partner after the game, I was beating myself up about missing such an easy one!! He said not to worry about it especially since I wa probably the only person who had a good enough look at it.

Hindsight, I think I got distracted by the possibility of having to bust back to the plate for a potential play that I didn't process everything right.

Ok boys, let's hear it...

You own it now. Kudos for sharing your screw up with us, and your thought process behind the why, it helps make us all better.

Let's break it down. First off, ...great, no one caught it, ..no harm no foul, BUT ...at least you understand what you did or didn't do, right? :)

Now ....HS rules ..... immediate dead ??? "That's interference, he's out" Send R2 back to second?

You missed it and recognized it. Bet it never happens again.

Personal observation...from your description, it sounds like you "trailed" B/R up 1BL to watch for the things you needed to watch for. With R2 however, I would have went first base line extended instead. I can see what I need to see (fail/foul, running lane violation, pulled foot) and still keep R2 in my peripheral, as well as his touch of 3rd. No need to worry about having to "bust back" to the plate either...couple steps to your right and you are back at the point of the plate.

As long as you own up, and resolve to never let it happen again, use it as a learning experience. We have all had those moments.

I agree. Anytime there are runners, you don't want to go up the line like you do with no runners. That looks really sharp and hustling and all that, but it is the wrong mechanic when there are baserunners. You can see everything just fine in reality from 1BLX.

I had a bone head moment tonight. A really good pitcher threw one just off the plate, batter checked his swing. I wanted to bang the pitch, almost called the swing and ended up with a very sad point at the batter and no he didn't. DM thought I called it a strike and questioned the count when it got to where he was struck out. Not a pretty mechanic.

I hate those where I'm like, do I want to call the pitch, the swing or neither.... One time, I ended up pointing straight up as I meekly said, "strike..." Not my finest moment. :shakehead:
