This isn't a number of games, or a perfect game, milestone. But it's worth a quick mention.

On Friday afternoon (my time), I worked a game in my third country, adding Japan to the list (US and Australia being the other two). It was a HS school game between two bases, and it was pretty bad baseball; there are plenty of varsity, more quite a few JVs, in my old area that would have stomped a team made of the best nine on the field. But, it was a game, and my first one in about nine months, since I packed the gear before my PCS.

The downside is: I'll be lucky get into double figures each year, and will have to resort to - gulp - working softball if I want to be on a field at all. There's an office on-base here that provides maps to various places, and other tourism-type advice to people, and it's staffed by Japanese nationals. So I went in this week, and asked if they knew of any leagues/associations that needed umpires, bearing in my I don't speak any significant Japanese.

He made at least two calls while I waited, and the language issue meant they didn't want me. Actually working the games wouldn't be an issue, in my mind, as the signals tell the story, and the verbals are usually English, or at least Japanese pronounciations of the English terms. But, the "communications issues" would be a problem. I guess if I had some Japanese language ability, it would have turned out differently.

So, US DoD schools, and the base rec league, will be it. Which makes the rainout on Saturday even MORE infuriating.

Umpired in New South Wales (Sydney) in the summer (our winter) of 1998 and '99. Had a whole lot of fun doing it too.
