Not the umpire, that's for sure. Bat boy, teammates, coaches or grounds crew, anybody but the umpire. If the team thinks they aren't, keep tossing until somebody sees the light.

Basically here is my answer (and one from just about everyone else on here that saw the video and your question).... IT'S NOT GOING TO BE ME! All that crap can stay on the field for as long as they like but I sure as HELL am not going to be picking that S up. That will either be some of his players or, since this is pro ball, probably a couple bat boys. Its their job, not mine.

Wally originally wants to know what Doc Brooks said, though I'm sure he's pretty confused as to why he got dumped as well.

I can't say whether or not Doc should've got dumped but Wally didn't need to go at the point when PU ran him.

As for the bats and balls, just sit and wait. If the field is not cleared, or individual(s) fail to indicate that the field will be cleared, in a reasonable amount of time, the game is over.

Best parts of the video:

1) "Stevie" gets put in 3 or 4 different positions as Wally is leaving

2) "Catcher, get out of the way!"

One of my favorites was when Wally was done with his tantrum throwing the bats and balls and said in his panting voice,"let's go have a beer Doc".

I never heard the umpire cuss at all. Did I miss something?

Nope! He didn't cuss. In this same video, Wally is explaining the story of when he went upstairs to the booth to talk to the radio guy. There is a video out there with showing him go up there and shows exactly what he said. The story is inaccurate just like in this one...

Ok , 1st of all this is not real Pro Baseball, Its a defunct Independent BS League. Those were not PBUC approved umpires . The hob nobbing with the manager before the game Would never happen in Rookie ball to AAA.

2nd if anything like this took place in any level of amateur ball (except maybe for D-1 ball) , The game is over and I am leaving. 4.15(f)

Who the f - - - is that poser? I can't think of one umpire that I even know or care to know, who would stand around, in uniform, on the field, on camera, shooting the sh!t with a manager (or coach) while throwing another umpire under the bus! And he's throwing him under based on the manager's account of the incident!

Wow!

That would be that particular league's umpire of the year.

This particular video was discussed a while ago and the news article recognizing this guy as the league's TOP umpire was included to the bewilderment of the forum.

I'm glad I work in an area and in an umpiring culture where a poser like that would be an absolute pariah.

He's a brown-nosing coward for crying out loud! I've never even imagined a more unprofessional display. It's like a video parody of how not to behave as an umpire.

Finn, let's be honest though - I'm sure you've seen many of those videos. For "professional baseball", the umpiring sure was a joke.

There's the one guy, George, who is an absolute tool. He wears a watch on the field as both BU and PU and uses an indicator as BU - for crying out loud, all the parks they're playing in have functional scoreboards. He seems more interested in chatting with players and managers to explain everything instead of handling himself like an umpire. And as BU I've seen him twice walk up and over the mound just for the sake of doing so. He conducts his plate conference as PU by giving the line ups back to their original manager and saying "take one last look at these - is this exactly sure how you want it?"; he has no clue how a double switch is made properly, let alone that it is possible.

Then there's the superstar tandem in the original video above. PU is a knucklehead, BU is out to lunch...no wonder Backman throws his tantrum.

AND then in Wally's other ejection video over the disputed home run - that PU is the biggest tool of them all - just watch it, I can't do that travesty "justice" explaining it on here.

Clearly that league's budget was tight judging by the talent pool that they hired for their umpiring staff.

Speaking of the double switch video...I'm a little lost on that one. I'm guessing there are rules particular to MLB / MiLB about how a double switch should be conducted? I couldn't find anything in particular in OBR but maybe I'm just missing it.

Oh and I understand this was an independent league and these guys were not PBUC umpires.

Here you go:

Edited to add: I understand what a double switch does and how it works but in these videos and another, he was talking about how a manager has to do it or he will be ejected, that's the part I am not sure about.

Posted

For whatever reason, this league decided to invent the penalty of manager ejection for failure to properly make a double switch. In straight OBR, the only penalty assessed is the inability to make the switch.

I'm in class on my BlackBerry so I have no idea officially, but I would be inclined to say the MLBUM

Posted

3.03 applies to multiple substitutions. MLBUM 3.5 clarifies the double switch. There is a difference. It is possible to meet the criteria for 3.03 while attempting to make a double switch but have done so illegally.

Remember, the manager must inform PU of his intent before he signals to bring the new reliever into the game.

Okay, so there was discussion about this. Maybe I can remember a thing or two...
