Misdemeanor conviction and $860 fine for assaulting a 16 year old umpire. Oh, and this from the Asheville Citizen-Times:

"Rob Mangone, president of Fletcher Youth Baseball and Softball, said at the time that the league had no tolerance for such behavior and that Cody would be banned from coaching in the league at least for the rest of the season."

A 16-year-old (also known as a child) is assaulted by a 30-plus year-old (sometimes known as a man), and that culprit, Samuel C. Cody, of English Oak Drive, Fletcher, North Carolina is compelled to pay a doctor a little less than a grand, and he could very well lose his coaching privileges for the rest of the season.

Well, wow is right. Wow. I wonder how soon the coward-@sshole's wrist recovered from that little slap. Do you think there was any redness?

I think any youthful umpire in that area can walk onto the field with boundless confidence, knowing that in the rare occurrence that there's an assault, he'll be fully protected by his North Carolina county's judges and prosecutors.

If I'm UIC, I don't schedule any umpires for any of his games. Period. I'm not putting another kid at risk.

What would Cody get if he had punched the judge during his court hearing? That's the same he should get for punching the kid. Pretty cut and dry if you ask me.

I'm sure we've all been in situations where you feel you're going to get.. either by a parent or a coach. But I'm 20-years-old and he's 16.... But that "fine" for medical bills is restitution from the criminal complaint, the 16-year-old victim and his family are able to sue the "coach" in a civil court also for pain and suffering, loss of wages, ect...

My hairiest moment was after a state final game and a father came up and told me, "You're lucky I don't stab you."

You're also lucky that you are a bright, civilized, refined young man and that you don't have to go through life as such a low form as that piece of waste that threatened you.

There are some people who believe that the call you make that goes against their son in the JV game you just worked is going to cost him a scholarship to Florida State and derail his ascent to stardom in the game. So you must be blamed and punished for your transgression.

Does that sound insane and ridiculous? It is. And they are.

This is the reason that when I started umpiring a couple of years ago I started with high school baseball. I've been trained very well by a chapter of guys who care about the game and are some of the finest umpires in the state of Texas. While there is never an excuse for physical violence at any game, having one son still playing select baseball I see plenty of very very poor officiating. I've seen plenty of coaches dumped for asking for clarification on a rule that was completely misapplied.

Many of the top guys in our chapter won't work youth games because of parents and coaches. Another goal I have for next year is to start doing youth games and bring the experience I've gained and the professional training I've gotten on my own to the youth field. Will I make a difference in games, maybe, will this have any impact on instances like thisn in our area, I don't know but I have to try. I don't want anyone to think that I'm the worlds best, I'm still learning but why can't I teach coaches and parents how a game should be run while I learn.

Some/many youth leagues suffer from officiating problems. While the causes are many from leagues not training umpires or backing them or even selecting the wrong people to umpire I do believe with some hard work you will be able to make a difference to this league and umpires.
