Is this the poster known as "John"? Geez man, who cares?

Then don't respond ...

More on this ....

zm1283;

Some of us do care about stuff like this. Stuff like, clean creased caps, ...clean ball bags, non wrinkled crisp charcoal slacks, clean shoes, etc, etc, etc ....

This navy ball bag thing (even though Cubby is one of my favorites) comes across as "sloppy" , and lack of detail. Something you shouldn't see at the MLB level.

Personally, ..I wouldn't step onto a u12 travel game rocking a black jersey and a navy ball bag. And no, that doens't make me better than anyone else....just sayin ;)

But that's me ....:2cents:

I'm wondering how/why he would even have a blue ball bag to begin with. When they wear powder blue, it has the black trim, so they wear black ball bags then as well.

Agreed Tim, that's what I was thinking too ........... navy hasn't been a part of the MLB uniform since ....the mid to late 90's ??

It's possible that a navy one got mixed into a box of black ones sent to them by their supplier. But you'd think someone on the crew would have caught it. It's the championship series for crying out loud.

Well, anyone who is devoted to the craft and everything that goes with abiding by its codes and standards should care, and I, for one, do care.

Why belittle the standard by chiding Thunder for bringing it up?

Whether Culbreth actually wore a blue ball bag or the light makes the color appear blue is not really relevant to the main issue. The issue is whether it matters that a ball bag matches the uniform.

It does matter.

It's black. It's just not "as black" as his shirt.

not when it matches the guys jacket he's talking to in picture 2

It might have matched the black -- 5 years and 100 washes ago.

1. I agree with umpete a few posts up. I think it is just faded.

2. It only matters to a small number of umpires on an umpire website that has an equipment section in its forum. If not every umpire on here cares or notices it, the players, managers, and fans at the game and the people watching on TV sure as heck don't care. I didn't even notice it and I watch the umpires during the game more than other fans do. You'd be hard pressed to find one person in that stadium who noticed that his ball bag was a tad bit faded.

With all of that said, I agree that it should match the uniform. I don't dispute that. When it comes down to it though, coaches and players ultimately don't care if your ball bag is jet black or a bit faded. Is it really worth worrying about on the Internet?

Edit: I think a few of you need to pitch in and buy Culbreth a couple of sparkling new ball bags. That would remedy this whole situation.

The guy makes hundreds of thousands of dollars for nine months of umpiring a year, and you make and accept the excuse that the bags could be faded!?! How can you make one point that claims perspective and then completely whiff on your next point?

They're probably faded. Wow!

Have a nice day.

I never made an excuse for him about his bags being faded. I just said that is what they look like. Does he probably need to buy a new set of bags? Yes. Did anyone but a small minority of umpires on here notice? No.

Guess what guys: The World Series crew could roll out in heather gray pants and no one but us would notice.

I am amused at how some umpires will steadfastly dismiss the opinion of the average fan as being of absolutely no value, and then claim that adhering to the uniform code is meaningless to the average fan, like his viewpoint is suddenly relevant.

Fans only care about us or notice us when we do something that goes against their team.

Their opinions don't matter, but they don't have an opinion on our uniforms because they don't notice them in the first place.

(This is assuming you don't walk on the field with holes in your pants or tobacco stains all over your shirt)

ZM;

I understand where you're trying to go, but ....I have a question for you...... What age group do you typically work?

I'm sorry guys. I was supposed to post this earlier, but I got tied up at work.

Culbreath sent me an email last night that he had spilled strawberry jam on his favorite BLACK ball bag and couldn't get it out in time for the game. He had to use his practice ball bag. He wanted me to apologize to the internet uniform police on U-E before a federal case was made out of it. He said no more strawberry jam before games.

Why does the age group matter to people now? I have seen at least 2 posts in 2 different threads asking this as if it makes any difference to one's opinion or knowledge of something. I have worked anything from 7 year olds to 65 year olds and a whole lot in between. That doesn't make a bit of difference when I discuss something with someone who has been to school and umpired in the minor leagues or someone who hasn't. Which I have done since there is someone in our group who went to AAA and now umpires with us b/c of his choice due to home circumstances. Not once does he ever dismiss anyone b/c of the level they never chose to achieve. He is a true professional and treats all as they should be: A Professional Umpire who umpires amateur baseball. I have the pleasure of being friends with 2 still in MiLB. Both of which are very humble and won't talk down to me as I have more years umpiring than both of them.

Just b/c these guys are on TV doesn't make them different as I would think you experienced, Thunder. But, they do need to work harder to maintain their appearance and skills. I think too many have forgotten or don't understand that concept. While I am not worrying about his ball bag, I understand why you do and why you notice it. Whether they like it or not, they are considered the pinnacle of umpiring and should look the part for aspiring umpires.

And, for any who don't like them being held to that standard or care to read it on the Internet, I don't think it is worth causing an argument over or a disagreement of where one's attention should or should not be.

Edit: Well, now there is a reason he didn't match.

To all:

First and foremost, ...all I did was ask a question, ...go look at the OP.

Second, zm1283 (in my eyes) sent a dig because I posted it ...

Third: My question regarding what age is being umpired has nothing to do with a question of someone's experience. Where I was going was ...like something I had said earlier .... "I wouldn't walk onto the field of a u12 travel game with a black jersey and a navy ball bag." My question to zm1283 was going to be the same....would he do that? Expecting him to say no, thus reinforcing how I look at it ....

I post these things as discussion points of interest that I think we'd all like and or notice. I don't expect to be ribbed for it. It's all in the name of, ...'hey guys , did you notice?' 24 posts later, ...look what we have ...

I have a confession. I regularly wear a black shirt with a blue ball bag. I think it looks smashing, except in bright sunlight. But we never get bright sunlight in Portland, so its almost never an issue.
