Honig's Ultimate Charcoal

Ok so I know the polywools are the way to go, and I do plan on going that way...next season. There are only about 2 people in our association that have the charcoals, one of which I figure I'll be calling a playoff game or two with. I do not see the need to go out and buy a pair of the polywool plate and base pants this late in the HS season. I am thinking of just going with the Ultimate Charcoal Combos. Now, I know the general concensus is to stay away from combos, but are they really bad considering the rare use I will get from them at this moment in the season? I probably only have about 8-12 games left in the season, with which I may call once or twice with someone that has charcoal. So, the ultimate question is would you guys recommend going ahead and getting the combos to save a little money this late in the season? Or should I just not get them at all and wait til next season for the polywools?

All I have is Combo pants.

I have no problems with them at all.

I've never seen them look good on anyone. They are either too tight on the plate or too big on the bases.

Get both pair. If you only have 8-12 games left (what about summer, etc?) then either don't get any, or get either the plate or the base, whichever you will be working mor, and get the other next year.

I wasted a lot of money on other pants that just hang in my closet. Poly wools are the way to go. Save your dough, and buy the best. Just get through your final games, and thank me later.

I have both the poly wools and the Ultimates, both in plate and base. I love the poly wools. The Ultimate plate pants are very nice, but the Ultimate base pants are cut significantly slimmer in the hips/crotch/butt area. They fit okay, but are just tighter than the poly wool base pants in the same size.

If you can't afford the poly wools, the Ultimates are a good choice. I wouldn't get combos, but they might fit better on the bases than the base pants do.

I just bought a base and plate pair of the Honigs ultimates. I like the ability to adjust the waist size. I have a 32-33 inch waist and bought 34. I have worn Combos in the past but the look of the plate and base pants when you are on the field is unmatched compared to a combo pair. Honigs was out of my size in the poly wool but I will grab a pair for next season.

The ultimate combos, which, like ZM mentioned, are more like base pants, actually have the saddle stitching in the seat, which doesn't look so good on the bases. Another thing: The shade of charcoal in the ultimates is a little lighter than the polywools. It also fades more quickly (mine faded in one year of light use), because they're laundered. (I dry-clean my polywools.)

If you are going to buy charcoals I would wait and buy poly wools.
