I just happened to read the beginning of the article below the video. It says the pitcher threw an outside pitch that struck the umpire. The last time I looked the side with the batter was the inside. :clap:

Anything farther inside your going to start loosing vision to the batter, anything to the other side puts you squarely in the "danger" zone. I will run the risk of that shot to the arm (when the players are of appropriate age, size, and skill) long before I'm gonna put my head in the firing line.

Up and/or back, doesn't help much either. To avoid it, or put your equipment coverage diff., runs to much risk. I know the times I set up in this position it's an awfully "naked" feeling, and I don't have the worlds best playing the position.

Pretty common thing for amateur umpires in youth baseball. We don't have MLB catchers squatting in front of us. Of course, it's usually a 12 year old throwing 65-70, not 93. But from 46 feet, it still hurts!

Been hit like that a HS Varsity games. Not at 90mph but it still hurt like heck!!!

I always have a 1-2 day dew on when I work the plate. Comfort thing. As far as the OP, bad on F2, worse on F1. MLB and can't hit area codes?
