p.s. if you use the "one more inning" after , say, 1:30 you take the stalling managers, and cheating umpires out of the mix.

p.p.s. If you're officiating a kids game, and you intentionally stall a game so you can go home early, why are you even out there? Why bother showing up in the first place, if you're going to pull something like that? Why not just ring a kid up on a pitch that bounces before the plate, while you're at it?

Quite a bit extreme. Especially, cheating umpires?

My questions still stands Pete and UIC: How much time are you willing to lie about, so that you can go home early? One minute? Two? Three? What's your cutoff, and why?

Lie? Really, some poor choice of words.

I am definitely staying out of this. This is not a win or lose kind of thread. Neither side can say the other is right or wrong. There are reasons for it all.

2 things to add. Not all baseball is kids and the adults have time limits. Also, kids have school the next day and the ones scheduled at 8 pm now have to wait around for an hour or 2 when they should be on the field enjoying the game when they expected to enjoy it. Just a thought to remember when one says "it's for the kids".

This is in no way indicating where I stand on the issue. Just don't like it when there are those who misuse words or phrases to make their point seem right. Just like "Sometimes, you just have to umpire." :HD:

Simply remember this. The game of baseball is a great game UNTIL adults become involved. This thread is a great example of that on both sides of the issue.

How many of you who are worried about a minute or so shaved off the back side know the second you started your game and adjust your ending time accordingly?

My bet not a one.

I do not start games at odd times. If my watch says 5:13, then the game starts at 5:15 b/c I am not concerning myself with remembering the 3. My clock starts on 5 minute intervals.

For the rest of my standpoint, I am refraining b/c it is a no-win situation. Wasted bandwidth at this point. No one is being swayed.

Circumstantial.

If its a slaughter, end it. If it's a close game, you are cheating the players for yourself. End of story.

Going to have to point this out, sorry. In one statement, end the game early. In the other, keep going. Leaves one confused. :HD:

I understand the point but being against it and for it in the same post doesn't make sense. And, as kylejt, on top of that, calling the umpires cheaters? Over the top completely.

My questions would be: If you think a slaughter is OK to stop the game, how much time do you allow and what is a slaughter? Also, in your own words, why are you "cheating" the losing team? Don't they get a chance to comeback?

Just don't like emphasis or misused words for making a point. Especially when one is walking on both sides of the fence.

While I think we all agree that time limit games are an affront to baseball, they are a necessary evil at many lower levels. If you take a game with a time limit, then follow the effin rules. If there is 5 seconds left, then play the next inning. Maybe the team was hustling to get the next inning in and just made it. If you don't want to follow the rules then don't take the game.

I will agree that if the game is a blow out and both coaches agree by their actions to shorten it, that you don't need to play it. That's no different from many other non-timed games.

So, now it is OK to shorten the game b/c the ADULTS want to go home early. So, follow the rules until the adults don't want to anymore. As an umpire, the coaches don't get to change the rules midstream. So, allow some to be changed, but not all I guess. If the coaches want to go home early, they can pull their team and forfeit the game. Why allow them to change the rules b/c they want to go home early?

What if the ADULTS wanted to move 1B closer? Would you allow that b/c they agreed upon it? Interesting.

Don't be so animate about being a stickler to the rules, but in the next breath, allow them to be changed b/c of the situation. The rules are the rules and umpires are not suppose to change them when they feel like it or as the situation calls for.

Just showing how no one in this thread is right or wrong in their stance of how to handle the time limit. There are reasons for both sides and much of one's stance may be situational.

Drop dead games are no good, and "no new inning" games are better. "One more inning" after a certain time, is better still, as it takes the stalling tactics out of the equation. Plus, if it's LL minors, you've just defined your last inning, and the 5 run limit can be taken off. It's a win-win-win situation.

I'm not sure I understand this concept completely.

Let's say the time limit is 1:45. The "one more inning" kicks in at 1:40. If the HT gets out at 1:44, then you have to go one more inning? Is that correct?

Or, is it this? HT gets out at 1:39. They have started before 1:40 so whenever this inning ends, they get one more inning. Is this correct?

If the first situation, then that is the same as "no new inning". Different wording, same concept. It only makes a difference for if the inning is unlimited or not. It affects nothing else.

If the second situation, then you are essentially playing 2 more innings (the new one and then the one not started yet).

A local organization uses a 1:45 time limit. No new innings after the time limit.

What's funny is that there's a rule that states "No new inning will begin if there is less than 5 minutes left." I asked the UIC why it's a 1:45 limit if we don't start after 1:40. He had no answer, except "We do it to stop a game from going too far after the 1:45 limit." He had no idea what I meant.

This is simply a contract tactic. The teams feel they get the 1:45 time limit and their money's worth, when in fact, they get the 1:40 time limit. It is "no new inning after 1:40" and the 1:45 means absolutely nothing unless it is a "drop dead" limit. Coaches are no wiser to figure it out.

Gentlemen (and I use this term loosely) I started this thread to get some opinions on time limit games and how to administrate them. I have received many opinions and suggestions for which I say thank you. However this thread has evolved into an argument off topic and also generated another thread which was even worse. I therefor suggest that this thread be closed , again with my thanks for all the good suggestions.

If I had a nickle for everytime thats happened on here, I wouldn't need to umpire for my tuition.

If the coaches want to go home early, they can pull their team and forfeit the game. .

That's effectively what I'm describing. The losing team decides it doesn't want to play the next inning, so terminates the game.

Suppose you're in a game with no time limit, but a 10-run rule. Home team trails by 10 in the bottom of the 6th (of a scheduled 7-inning game). With two outs, B3 doubles. B4 singles and R2 tries for home. The throw is there in plenty of time, F2 tags R2 in plenty of time, but in the midst of all the dust, you (as PU) see the ball bounce up out of F2's glove and then back into the glove. No one else sees it. F2 doesn't even realize it, as he holds the glove and ball up for you to see. What do you call?

Safe. I saw it and I am not going to "steal" one since it isn't judgment (or at least, it doesn't sound like it is judgment of if the tag knocked it out or not). Again, this is related to how I feel in the "cheating" thread. I am not calling something b/c I feel a certain way about what went on. I am calling it within the rules.

Dropping the ball on a play where it is obvious the drop was due to the tag is outside the rule of what a tag is. I am calling him safe. That part is not situational to me.

There is a difference between something being relative to the umpire and the game vs something being blatantly wrong which is against the rules. The time limit issue is relative to how the game is going. Dropping the ball on a tag which was clearly due to the tag is against the rules.

In fact, I had a similar situation of what you are describing.

R2, 2 outs, HT up by 10 runs in the top of the 5th, only 1:05 played. GB hit to F4 who bobbles it and doesn't get the BR. R2 comes around and tries to score. F4 throws to F2. Ball beat BR but to the 1B side of the plate. F2 caught it and reached back. It was close depending on the angle. F2 tagged him after R2 touched the corner of the plate. I called him safe. They get the 3rd out afterwards and we go to the bottom of the 5th. In the bottom of the 5th, HT got the 11th run and I called "Ball game" as soon as he touched the plate.

My partner comes in and asks me "How close was that play?" I told him "It wasn't even close to me. He was safe easily." He tells me "I ask b/c it was 10-0." My only response was "OK."

Again, it is situational as to how I manage a game. This one was a good played 14U game. I was done in 1:15. I am not going to complain about that kind of game and welcome it. If we had to go the whole game, I have no problem b/c the losing team was still trying and both teams still appeared to want to play the game. I have no issues with that even if it did come to 1:49 of 1:50.

This is an issue where I am going to "walk on both sides of the fence". Simply b/c the issue is relative to how the current game is going for its participants and me.

Why should the thread be closed?

Did we reach the time limit? (Sorry guys couldn't resist) I thought I had one more paragraph of air time.

FWIW: If you think this thread is bad you have NOT seen anything. Just visit some of the other sites. There were differences of opinions that were shared and yes the topic might have been "beaten to death" but in general ALL Forums are relatively slow and less face it you can only talk about the concept of "last time by" for so long.

Discussion are ok that's why this part of the Forum is called Free for All.

I have been on several other forums (member of 4) and this is one of the best. Yes I have been on a couple others where members tear other members to shreds and that is putting it mildly. This forum is one of the best for not doing this. That's why I like it. I may not say much , but I read a lot. And learn a lot.
