Frankly, I have had generally great experiences with Honig's as well. Because I live in So.cal, I usually get stuff in a day or two, and with My ABUA discount ... prices (including shipping) on the things that I order from them wind up being pretty close to anywhere where else..and faster.

I had talked to some of the guys around my area and I think I have come to a conclusion as to my issues with Honigs. It comes down to customer service and feeling welcome when you walk in or talk to them on the phone. In SoCal I knew ALL of the guys there and it was like family. However here I feel like a stranger and that I am intruding when I walk into the office in Salem.

I feel that old feeling dealing with Ump-Attire and thats why most of my business will go there.

I think you have made an astute observation and analysis Arik. The guys at so cal honigs are great. It does take time to break into a new circle of relationships whether personal, professional or consumer. Having said that though, Jim and his crew are first rate, the customer service unparalleled, and they do feature some unique items.

Regarding the whole feeling new and uncomfortable thing in a new location...

That's pretty much gonna be the case anywhere you go. It's not that how you were treated in store A was bad; it just wasn't up to the "normal" quality of store B, which is on a level higher than normal because they knew you.

I went to the Ann Arbor office recently after having only ever been to the Canadian office. There, I'm on a first name basis with the whole staff. Being in Michigan was different but that's not to say that I didn't receive bad service.

But I will say ordering from Jim last spring was first rate. He's got a fantastic crew over there and I am looking forward to dealing with them again once I get my order put together...it can be difficult finding the funds to order new gear on the budget of a student!

When you actually go to Honig's rather than order over the phone or the web, they seem to treat you like you're an interruption. It's a far cry from the way you get treated at a normal store. (It's not a normal store.) If you get to know them a little, it changes, but at first, even the Southern California store's staff gives you a chilly reception. They don't come out and say, "Why are you here; don't you have a computer or a phone?" but that's definitely the vibe they put out at first.

Re: Jim Kirk: No umpire store has absolutely everything we all require, and no umpire store has the best price on everything we all require. But Jim (and his operation) is without rival as having the best web presence, and the best and most personal service. He does it right. You can tell he loves it to no end. And that's worth a great deal.

Excellent observation ....

Couldnt have said it better myself Finn.

I got to do some clinic work with one of the guys from the Salem office this past weekend. I personally like the guy and he is funny as heck. But when I go in there I feel like I want to be anywhere but there. As for my buddies at the SoCal store... I only really know Heath, Alfonso and Tony. Who is Jim? (havent bought anything there really since Tom left for Boise).

Is this Heath?

He did the USC/UCLA game at Dodger Stadium Sunday. And Tony worked third in the early game.

if this is him and he works at Honigs, He might want to check out a new belt...LOL

The first thing I noticed when I looked at that picture is that funky belt. Good grief. I can't imagine going out on the field at such a high-profile game with any piece of equipment that looks like that. But if that's the guy who works at Honig's, well, it's even more unimaginable.

Did any of you actually watch the game?..

If so can you tell me about the Hp mechanics when looking at the pitches?...

I've seen most of the UCLA games so far this year. I took the picture.

What, precisely, are you referring to in terms of the plate mechanics?

How much his head would move when the pitch was coming in...lots of head movement.. all game.

If that guy works at Honig's I find it odd that he's wearing a Diamond mask, considering they don't even carry them.

Sorry for getting off topic, but has anyone seen Peperdine this season? I'm going to be at their game tonight.

Maybe he really likes that mask..

I saw that. And he worked the previous Sunday and he never stays locked in. He's a huge guy, but still.

I think the photo is Heath (never worked with him on the dish). Good guy though as is Tony and the rest of the guys at Honigs SoCal. I actually thought the PU did a pretty good job. Completely sure who it was though.

Think my first Pac 10 game Im going to attend is the Civil War game here in Portland between Oregon and Oregon State.
