What level ball will you be working?

You can not beat any of the Wilson Hard Shell CPs (Gold/Platinum/Charcoal)

I have to agree with Semper fi and recommend any of the wilson west vest cps. I use the platinum. When it comes to any safety equipment always get the best you can afford.

I have a guy that works for me, and I just bought him a Gold to replace that overstuffed radiator. He hated the bulk. Get a West Vest.

I agree with Kyle. There is plenty of other gear on the market that offers great protection without making you look like the guy who is hiding John Candy underneath his shirt.

Thanks again for the insight. I've been doing LL and plan to be involved in HS ball as well this year. I know from reading through several posts on the forum that the WV's seem to be highly regarded. I didn't recall seeing much on the Allstar though. So, is the WV an overkill at the LL level?

NO!

Years ago, I was umpiring a LL minor game wearing a soft, ribbed protector. I got thumped pretty hard on the left side of my chest, and just felt goofy for days. Slightly dizzy, unbalanced, etc. My wife's uncle, who is a pretty famous heart surgeon, said it probably messed with my electrical system regulating my heart. A FOUL BALL OFF A TEN YEAR OLD EFFED UP MY HEART RHYTHM!

So I wear a Platinum (or original, or Douglas, etc) wherever I go. Even to Costco. So no, it's not overkill.

Not overkill since you plan on moving into HS Level ball.

Buy the best now and you will not have to buy another one when you move up into higher level ball.

No such thing as to much protection.

You need more protection in LL as you will take more shots in LL than you do in higher levels. A good catcher is your best protector and the higher you go the better they get. :FIRE:

It is a bit of a catch 22 where lower levels you get hit more but it hurts less, then at higher levels you get hit less but they can be real SOBs

I'm not 100% sure, but almost, that SanDiegoSteve on this site uses the All-Star CUP30 (their latest), lightest also. He's doing all sorts of levels with it..

For the most part i can agree with you here Warren. Its that in higher levels you get hit once and it hurts. Its just at the lower levels, true you get hit with a lot less force but you get hit more... usually in the same place for same stupid reason.
