When I watch a game on TV. Like the 2nd semi-final in the LLWS today. I saw all the crew members wearing their jackets tonight. Now, not sure if they all had the same "it's cold" or "it's going to be cold" or if they're just old, or some of them made sure they matched.

But, my question is. I like the cold. It was only about 68 degrees during that game. Personally I would not feel the need to wear a jacket. Personally I see no need to even own a jacket. Unless we're umpiring in winter, I'm all set anytime in just a regular attire. It could be 45 and I would be easily think it was "pleasant". To me 70 is somewhat hot and I've been outside in -40F degree weather (actual temp) not bundled up (of course only for a brief period). So would it be improper to not wear a jacket if every other crew member is? Especially if I'm PU, gosh, why would I want to take away a nice day where I might not sweat by wearing a pull over...

Most of the groups I work with prefer the base umpires to match, but allow PU to be independent. Ususally it is BUs with jackets,PU without.

Unless maybe PU spilled coffee on his shirt.....:question1:

there some things i disagree with you. your watching the game inside a room. So how would you knwo the temps at the ball game?

First off i did fall ball without a jacket and boy was i cold i wish i had umpire jacket. hack frost was dealy the game. they make umpire jackets for a reason.

I typically don't wear a jacket when the air temp is cold, generally it comes out when it is cool & windy. I am a "husky" fellow, and when I sweat, sweat a lot. So when the wind is blowing I wear a jacket to keep me from getting extremely cold. In some places that can lead to hypothermia.

In regards to crew matching, for the most part leagues will state that all BUs must have same apparel, but the PU can wear what he wants. In my leagues the PU has the decision on the color of the day. Many people will say that when the BUs are wearing jackets/smocks that the PU should be in a LS shirt, but I am not that picky.

I umpire from March to October.....and in those early march flurry filled freezer fests, I have worn every piece of clothing I owned.....we often get get game time temps in the 40's and often hold up games until a snow shower passes.....

In HS games our jackets are matching and if one wears one, both wear one....in crews the BU match, the PU can choose...

If I am on a crew where the decision is to wear a jacket and I am concerend about being too hot, I just wear the jacket over my T-shirt and ditch the jersey...

that being said, I once wore 2 t-shirts, a long sleeve jersey and 2 jackets...gloves and an earband....and was still cold......

I work year round here in california. we like hot weather here so in the winter we do wear jackets. when I have the plate i get hot and dont like wearing a jacket unless its 50 or below. it is normal here for the BU to wear a jacket and the PU to wear a long sleeve jersey. below 50 everything we have

I checked the nearest NWS station for hourly temps and it did not deviate from 68 degrees. Also checked the nearest personal weather stations I could find and most were at or about 68 degrees.

I have a high tolerance for cold.

In my neck of the woods, a jacket would be worn only if it's quite cold AND windy. Typically, we wear them in the early spring games, but we can usually dump them by April. Of course, we've been known to have snow in late April or May...

Wear what is comfortable for you, but match on bases if 3 or 4 man crew, even if you wear SS T underneath and partners wearing LS shirts. At least you will look the same on outside.

I rarely wear a jacket behind the plate, I think once this year, and for that DH I had on everything I own for the first game on bases including, ear cover and gloves. There was a steady 15-20 mph wind for most of the first game. When I went behind the plate for the second the wind had died down some and I ditched the ear cover and gloves, but still had everything else on.

Critter, the whole crew wore jackets. The only thing I'm really trying to say is, even at 60 degrees, I would still be like, it's too hot, why the heck do I have to wear a jacket? It was low 60's near the start of the season for one of my first plate games and I was like, this is really nice.

Up here in Idaho, it gets chilly during the HS season. I used to wear a pullover on the plate on those chilly days, but after getting a couple LS shirts, I prefer those behind the plate. They are much more comfortable. I just wear a UA cold gear shirt underneath, and it works out great.

On the bases, I have a navy and a black pullover. The only time I didn't match my plate guy was a chilly, rainy day where he didn't want to wear a pullover, and just went with his polo blue shirt on the dish, so I wore my black pullover on the bases. I saw the MLB guys were doing this, so if it's ok for them, it's ok for a Legion game.

It is perfectly acceptable for the plate to wear a shirt and the base to wear a jacket.

If a crew decides to wear jackets, that's their call. If they are comfortable then great, I don't care if it 85. If they want to wear shirts in 35 degree weather, that's their call. Guys from warm climates are quicker to put on a jacket than someone from a cooler climate, it's what they are used to. Remember there are Caribean guys on the crews.

The first paragraph is to blue32, the second paragraph is a general response to the whole thread.

i don't think 60 degrees are too hot. but not enough for a jacket.

I'm from Louisiana, and if any of you have ever been to Louisiana, you would know it definitely has probably the weirdest weather around. On any given day in December, you can wake up to 30 degree weather, go to work/school, get finished, walk outside and it could be 85 degrees.

With that said, our cold months don't really start until around February or so (our REALLY cold months - and that is only really about 10-20 degrees, which here, is COLD). I can remember several Christmas mornings when I would wake up and it be 80 degrees outside.

Our baseball/softball seasons usually start around middle-end of February and some people can deal with the cold and some can't. We, like many of you have already said, kind of go with a "wear what you want to" type of understanding. However, we only run a 2-man system during regular season games, so this would go without saying that if the BU wears a jacket, it is reasonable that the PU doesn't have to and if they both decide to, then that is fine also. I personally like the fact that everyone should match and think that if majority vote for/against the jacket, it should go with the majority vote.

Nah, we very rarely get snow but you never know what the weather is going to be doing. You cannot judge the evening by the mornings, if you know what I mean. Sometimes it will be cold in the mornings, hot in the evenings, and other times it will be warm in the mornings and then really cold in the evenings. Maybe 80 degrees when you get up and then when you go to call a 6:00 game that evening, about the 3rd inning or so you could get pelted by some heavy hail/sleet because it's around 40 degrees lol You tend to keep a jacket handy at all times, especially during February, March, and part of April.

That's nothing, it will regularly get below -13F up here in the winter.

for you just to say that's nothing which is wrong. No matter what the temp is anything below 30 is cold enough for snow.

time to put jackets on. I remember when i was in high school one year and they 2hr delay cause it was so cold. Now that say something. I know plenty of school that actually closed around us. even 40' degrees cam be cold.

Not saying I wouldn't put a jacket on, that would be crazy.

Why all the fuss about jackets? If it's cold enough for you, wear one. Around here during the spring, the PU wears what he wants and the BU wears what he wants as long as they match. I'll usually wear a long sleeve shirt as PU instead of a jacket if it's not extremely cold. On the bases it's always a jacket or short sleeves.

critter, stop taking everything so literally. Context, my friend.....
