:ranton:Is it just me or does anyone else think Bobby Cox is world class rat. I used to like the braves although I'm a Phillies fan. Around here the Braves are the most telivised team so I see them a lot. The guy is constantly chirping about balls and strikes and just about any play that don't go his way.

Yesterday there was a play where he had a guy stealing 2B and the umpire screwed up and called a ball (4) but appeared to signal a strike. The umpire expained that he was letting his partners know it was ball four ( it was a close pitch ) but just screwed the mechanics up. Well of course Bobby came out and was ejected within seconds of his apperance on the field. What was that, about his 10,000th ejection. Meanwhile the commentators are setting up there saying, " I can't believe he ejected him after he screwed up. He should just set there and take it ." Bull Sh$$. I guess the next time Bobby makes a stupid move as a manager, the umpires have the right to tell him he sucks or drop the F bomb on him and he can't say nothing.

I hope the Braves never win another pennate as long as Bobby Cox is the manager.:HD:

I like this part of your post the best. Sometimes I wish umpires in general would go against the "professional" aspect of the job and start returning the favor to any coach that thinks mouthing is appropriate.

No one (in their right mind) pays money to watch what the umpires will do. MLB is in the entertainment business. The umpires play a part, and the part is to stay in the background.

The "commentators" on the video that I watched (Bobby Cox Strike to Ball) was just one, Vin Scully (IMO the best in the business).

There is no doubt that it didn't look real good on the HP ump's part. From the video, the pitch was close enough that it could go either way, but it was obvious to me that the HP ump must have verbalized "ball" because the batter immediately dropped the bat and started taking off his pad in order to take his base. I have no idea why he pointed off to his right...

:WTF Who in the hell are YOU?

Well here's an idea:

When you get to the level that Bobby Cox is at, you can't whine.

Until then, umpire at your level.

Just a thought.

(and now, I'm not a Braves fan, just a fan of the game).

So STFU and stay at your level, and do your job.

As far as I know, no one on this board is a professional( MLB ) coach, player, or umpire. Yet this section is on this board for discussion. I did not claim to be a professional and as for my level, I am the same level as you, a fan who has watched the game his entire life. Which makes my opionion as valid as yours.

If you can say as long as you have watched pro baseball, you have never critisized any player or coach for thier actions and agreed with everything thay have done, then I am sorry I offended you.

As far as the commentators, it was on Sports South, which I think is Joe sciambi and Joe Simpson. Local Channel.

Whoa, Brian! Perhaps that response was a bit, well, strong?

I don't have a dog in the hunt here; I have my own opinions, but that's not why I'm writing.

MY point is: you _do_ recall this is Umpire-Empire, right, and not one of the other boards? This is a board where we try to avoid the flame wars and in-fighting that goes on elsewhere. All I know is, when I first read your reply, I thought "Where'd THAT come from??" And even now, seeing it again, I think the same thing.

Just sayin'.

Brian, Lighten up. Did we have a bad day?:HD:

Honestly... the HP umpire did kick it. Maybe not with the ball/strike call or meriweather's out call (no problem there... he was just doing his job at second... especially with the strike? call at home).

I will just say we have all done this before. Our brain and body want one thing and out of no where our mouth says something else. Its just normally we dont see it from the big boys.

The EJ probably came after he told Cox to stop demonstrating and he wouldnt. That part of the ejection was correct but he should (and did) take an earful from Cox for his mental boo-boo.

I guess in all fairness to Bobby Cox, the announcers were what really got me on this one. I mean Bobby came out, said his piece, and then said a little too much and got run. But the announcers saying that the umpire was wrong because he screwed up and should just set there and take anything really pissed me off. They were still saying the same thing the next day in another game.

I mean if I kick one, I will give a coach a little slack between the lines because of it. But the lines don't change and if you cross one you have to go.

Just speculation, I wonder if Bobby Cox didn't try to use the situation as a sneaky way to argue balls and strikes and that's why he got ejected. It was a very close pitch. If the umpire admits he made a mistake with his mechanics and vocalized a ball, what more can a coach say unless he argues that the pitch was a strike. Again that's just speculation.

I'm guessing that Cox got run for balls and strikes as well as demonstrating after being asked to stop.

With that said, according to the clip, the announcer was Vin Scully and I too agree that he is one of the most impartial announcers around (sadly we are losing him to retirement after the end of this season or maybe next). He is one of the few that will call it how it is and if later it turns out he was wrong, he will say so.

Now, if I remember from the OP, you said you were watching it on the regional broadcast which means that Vinny was not the announcer you heard. It was one of the local Braves guys who I know FOR A FACT are homers. I believe you posted the wrong clip (if you could find one of the local braves broadcast it might support your argument better).

With that said, the HP did screw up, did take an earful from Bobby and when Bobby didnt comply with his request to stop demonstrating, got the heave ho.
