Apparently I've called a few too many games this season (or need to call some more!). While I was on vacation last week I dreamed I was calling a game and had an incredibly odd situation.... That got me thinking about what to do if it ever really happened.

Batter hits a pop fly in the infield. Ball lands about four feet foul 15-20 ft. up the 1B line. It bounces into fair territory past a player who makes a swipe at the ball and misses. Ball continues rolling into the infield and rolls into foul territory a foot and a half past 3rd.

It's highly improbable, but has a higher probability on closed bases. Now, which way would you point to motion fair in this sitch?

It's not fair until it passes third. So, the play is the same as "ground ball past third. Which way would you point?"

Point the same way.

Well you have two different calls here and it depends on the positioning of the umpires, but in my reading both calls would be the PU's calls.

First, with the call on the 1st base line I'd point fair with my left arm. Depending on how close the ball is to the plate I will usually point to the mound if it is close to the plate and my fair point might be misread as a foul point, this way there is no confusion... we'll hopefully.

The next call will also be the PU's then I'd point fair with my right hand in the more typical way.

But just as soon as you think you'll never see something like this it will happen to you.

I don't know if I am missing something here, but I only see 1 call, you have to hold judgment until the ball is touched, passes 1st/3rd, or stops. So I am not doing anything until one of those 3 happens, then I point fair and let the chips fall where they may.

What call on the 1st base line? No call, no point.

True. Good points.

Is Fort Monroe officially closed now ? As my 6 year old would say : " That hurts my heart ".

Let's just say it really wasn't the most relaxing of vacations. I was ready to come home after the first day. Getting extended family together for supper is fine. Trecking halfway across the country to be stuffed in a condo half the size of a normal house for a week is not.

Closed bases are the 60 ft. LL/Cal Ripken 9 and 10 yr. olds.
