Trout78... Well if you describe yourself as being a purist...which when I look it up is defined as, One who practices or urges strict correctness. Well then you must have severe dislike when you umpire games where a DH is used , is played under the lights, played on a field that does not have a dirt and grass infield, As a umpire purist yourself, you must also hate working with a partner, having to set up behind the catcher and use a mask and a CP. This great game has gone through some pretty substantial changes in her lifetime. All these modifications have changed baseball from it's pure, original form. Also I see you applaude a call of verbal interference which to me seems to be the misaplicaion of the rules, based on a personal bias. This again to me is something an umpire is not supposed to do. So it seems you are not the purist you claim.

OK Gents, Here's another question I have for you all. If a player is ejected while the ball is alive and in play, can he make an out? OBR rule set : R2 tries to score on base hit and is ruled safe on a close play at the plate. Catcher goes ballistic and is immediately ejected. Meanwhile Batter runner tries for second and catcher fires the ball to second and he is tagged out. So does this out count? Does the runner get to stay at 2nd?

OK, Second guessing has resulted in me posting this.... 0 Out. Batting Order: Able, Baker, Charles, Daniel. Able leads off and hits a triple. Then Charles bats instead of Baker. Charles hits a single to score Able. The play comes to a stop and the ball gets thrown into the pitcher. The pitcher steps on the mound and is taking the signals. The 2nd baseman yells to appeal that Charles batted out of order. Charles realizes he has batted in Baker's turn and doesn't want the run taken off the board so he starts running to second. The pitcher steps off legally but instead of appealing, he throws to the 2nd baseman who then tags out Charles. The defence still wants to appeal the batting out of turn in order to have Able sent back to third. The defense now appeals that Baker batter out of turn. After checking the line-up, the umpire calls Baker's spot in the line-up out for batting out of turn and Charles comes up to bat with Able at third and 1 out. My thought is the BOO appeal was lost in making the play to put out Charles. There is still one out, but Daniels is now the proper batter. But I'm not 100%

I've got to echo what's been said in that this is his call an should stay his call. As for the correct response. What I would do is call time, meet with your partner, tell him you have nothing to help him out, then let him make and wear the call.

I've never heard of a turnback fee, although I would never consider turning back a game assignment I accepted .My feeling on this is if you accept an assignment, you are committed to that game. If i were and assignor and found out you turned back my game for another, you would quickly drop to the bottom of the list.

Hi James, Sorry, but I am going to make it 2 to 1 against your call. I agree with Johnnyg08's response and rule reference. This is not a time play, it's an appeal play. The player was put out (on appeal) at 1st base, due to missing it Therefore no runs score.

This situation is with men on base..so that applies When ever I put my hand up, in this situation it is in fact calling time, and I then put the ball back into play, So, Is this what you are saying?,"To avoid the step off and start all over again requirement, simply do not indicate that time may be called(Implied)? Your rule reference is now one for the learning library called the brain, BUT, How would you make the pitcher step off and start all over?? Is it an illegal pitch if he does not? I'm looking for some game management and proceedural instruction now

This will be a long preamble but I hope you stay with me in order to offer advice or ideas on how you would handle the situation. So here is the scenerio..In Canada we have Mens AAA Senior baseball players over 21years old (mix of college, former pro's, adults) OBR rule set with some minor variations I've got the stick. The two teams playing each other are crosstown rivals. One batter, likes to make sure he's good and ready and makes sure the PU gives him time to set his feet etc. a real, Mike Hargrove Opposing pitcher knows this batters routine and just to play games with the batter he immediately comes set. He has no intention of delivering the ball he just wants to mess with this batter as this is the only player he does this to. When the batter sees this he jumps out of the box compaining that he is ready to pitch and he is not ready. The pitcher steps off when this happens and then immediately steps back on and assumes the set position I advise the bater that I will not let play begin until everyone is ready. I demonstrate this by letting him know and showing him that I put up my hand in the stop sign to the pitcher. Despite this he still he jumps like a scared rabbit when he sees the pitcher already come set as he is getting ready. So this little dance wraps up with the pitcher delivering the pitch after I had called play. He even pauses that little bit to prevent a quick pitch and I have time to lock in Between innings, the offensive manager comes to me to complain that the pitcher can't do what he is doing as it gives him an advantage. He says he can't come set until I put the ball into play. I counter that there is no advantage because the ball is dead and nothing happens until I put the ball into play. He counters with the argument that if there are baserunners they are not able to get a lead because the pitcher is already set and will be able to pitch before they have a chance to lead off properly The conversation pretty much wrappeed up quickly with the manager saying no he can't and me saying yes he can... So, ladies and gentlemen of the jury...what would you do with a pitcher like this? Does the manager have a legitimate beef?? All opinions respected and appreciated.

The umpires were wrong. The defense was deprived of an opportunity to get an out because the runner was helped to a safe spot on the base. 7.09 (h) In the judgment of the umpire, the base coach at third base, or first base, by touching or holding the runner, physically assists him in returning to or leaving third base or first base. I know it was mentioned in the OP...Would the injury factor not have an impact at all??

Adding no he didn't is a start...BUT... The key point with this play is that it proves that BOTH umpires need to be prepared for that unexpected check swing appeal. As the PU don't wait to hear, "Check that!" from the defence You need to initiate the appeal automatically by pointing at your partner and asking, Did he go!!!. Also as the BU, don't be in LaLa Land in a situation like this. Be ready He said he ruled it a "ball" so why does he need to check it? Because that is the only call that the defence can appeal

He made it personal. By using YOU he stopped talking about the play and it then became about you the umpire Once that line is crossed he's punched his ticket.

If you are allowed, and you know its not a judgement call, you protest the decision. It may seem extreme, BUT you do have that right (again, if allowed.) If anything it might cause the umpire to look up the rule try to convince himself he was right and you were wrong..he will find out otherwise and perhaps not make the same mistake again.

A view of things around the 1:18 mark shows the catcher actually shoves the PU out of the way. He was already off balance and that's what put him on the ground

Welcome to the club!!!! As a newbie I'm assuming you will be doing low level games so the initial CP purchase will do you for the short term. HOWEVER, if you plan to do this for the long term Upgrade early, the money spent will increase your chances of staying safe behind the plate as you start doing upper level games. Talk to some of the umpires who do the upper level games now, see what gear they use get their opinions and make choices that way Uniform standards are usually decided by your association. So check with the leadership to see what you should have in your gear bag. If Blue is the standard, you don't need to get other colours initially. Every one you work with should have that colour so you are all good. And PLEEEEAAASSSEEE, wear your shinpads under your pants, DON'T weat you hat backwards when you are the Plate Ump, buy a plate hat they are not that expensive, and most importantly...HAVE FUN!!!!! Remember Rule 1.01 "Baseball is a GAME played between 2 teams" Have a great season

I like no snow ever, personally... And not just for umpiring reasons - you people that live in the frozen north are crazy. Always makes me wonder how people ended up there to begin with. People far hardier than me, that's for sure... Not all of us in the "frozen north" are crazy. We like having a change in season, a white Christmas, and no need to board up the house and head for higher ground come hurricane season. Besides living up here and watching shows like, Nancy Grace makes me believe that all the crazies life in Florida (I hope you take this post as it is intended...in jest)

IMHO All you need to have is the players NAME. See OBR references below. OBR: 3.04 A player whose NAME is on his teams batting order may not become a subsitute runner for another member of his team 3.05 The pitcher NAMED in the batting order handed the umpire and chief, as provided in Rule 4.01(a) and 4.01 shall pitch to the first batter etc etc etc. 6.01(a) Each player of the offensive team shall bat in the order that his NAME appears in his teams batting order I do believe that when this rule came into being players did not wear numbers they were numbered by thier position

That last line shows you already posess one of the best skills an umpire can have, a great attitude. You learn from it and move on :clap:
