Bunt (or batted ball) hits B/R on way to 1st
GreyhoundAggie replied to GreyhoundAggie's topic in Rules
I see your dilemma jj, The obstruction would normally guarantee the batter the right to first base. I think this is the way to view it. Would the interference have occurred if you had not had obstruction? For example, say R1 is obstructed going to 2nd and gets hit by the batted ball. You could say the obstruction caused the interference, and ignore the interference. In this case the interference was not caused by the obstruction, so the interference takes precedence. That is my take. -
I call the upper pitch to be at the elbows when the batter is swinging on varsity level. Hollow of the knees. But it needs to be right off the corners for me. I dont give the pitch where the catcher sets up off the plate by a ball and the pitcher nails it. maybe a half ball. Depends.

I have an out. Any obstruction by the F2 on the BR does not allow him to kick the ball intentionally. BR is out. All other runners return. -
Got some oakley's this week. Got the Radar frame Crystal Black's with Fire Iridium Pitch lens which is designed for baseball. They are comfortable so far, will be interesting to see how I like them on the field.

They might have had older versions of the Nike Airmax. I ordered the 2013 model. I know it's not leather, but I was able to get it all black except for the swoosh is grey. I figure it shouldn't be too much trouble to wipe down or clean, but only time will tell. They have a lot of mesh on them but they will breathe well. I am a little worried how they will look on the field, but i figure most people aren't paying attention to my shoes if they are black. I am more concerned about being able to walk after the game Hopefully the wide fit will work good for me. I will get them in about a month.

Good to know I can read. -
I am wanting to check my understanding of the situation. This is FED. B/R hits a squibber down the 1st base line. Here are my scenarios and the ruling i believe applies. Please correct if i'm wrong. 1) ball touches B/R in fair territory. Ruling: Ball is dead. B/R is out, Runner's return to their TOP base. 2) ball touches B/R in foul territory. It is not intentional. Ruling: Ball is now foul and is dead. B/R is not out. Runners return. 3) B/R kicks ball in fair or foul territory (ball must have chance to become fair if currently foul) Ruling: Ball is dead. B/R is out, Runner's return to their TOP base. I think that captures what I want to check out. You could possibly get a 2nd out on the Interference if intentional. Just boning up on my rules before the season gets rolling.

Very nice. I may have to look into this after the season and before summer ball hits. I imagine it would help keep cool in this 100 degree Texas heat. Thanks for posting those Pete.

I tried these out at the store yesterday, and they were very snug. I don't think the D is close to an EE. It was pinching me on the instep area of my forefoot, so i am not going to end up getting the zigs unfortunately. I am looking at the possibility of Nike Airmax. You can get EE if you custom order through Nike. That;s what the pro umpires were wearing at the clinic i attended. I tried the standard Nike Airmax, and the Zigs. D width just doesn't cut it

That PDF of the case book and rule book together is great. Thanks for that. It is really helpful. I bought the app for my Ipad. I figured it is worth it. Cheaper than the price of a rules book alone.

If there was a recurring theme to the weekend. It was GET SET! Over and over again we got caught still moving when the play happened, trying to get a closer position. Angle over distance. Game management was a big one, how to properly handle arguments. Stay calm and don't let the argument ruffle you. Less words is more. Proper footwork on the bases. Square your shoulders to the baseball. Follow the baseball and stay in the working area. Proper rotations. Communicate. Let your partner know where you will be or what you have. "I'm going out, I got 3rd if he comes" etc. The two times you want to be seen as an umpire, on whackers, and strike 3. Sell them. Show you saw the play, call what you see, if no interference on a close play or ball near runner, give safe mechanic with "that's nothing". Preventitive umpiring will save you a ton of arguments and show you are in control. I knew most of my responsiblities going into the clinic. But had never been shown the proper footwork on steals of 2nd, pickoffs to 1st, double play balls. They just don't get that detailed or have the time to show it to you when you are calling ball or first starting out. The instructors showed me i had been lining up in the slot wrong for 5 years. They said i had a solid stance, good mechanics and timing, but i was behind the catcher too much. Don't be afraid to get out in that gap, you may feel unprotected, but that's ok. They also said the only time you should be in C are man at 2nd, man at 3rd, or man at 2nd and 3rd. With 2 outs, go to B for the "instinct" play to 1st. I know this is rambling a bit, just trying to get out what i can remember now that I thought was important before I forget it all

We had about 60 umpires total. It was put on by one of the chapters of our state organization. for 85 bucks it was worth every penny. Those guys are real down to earth too. They all started where we are. I just hope I can remember it all when the time comes. I am really going to work on it hard during the pre-season scrimmages.

Just wanted to share with you guys the awesome experience I had this past weekend. Went to an umpire clinic here in Texas over the weekend. Our instructors were Marvin Hudson, Lance Barksdale, Lance Barrett, and 3 other minor league umpires. I learned more about umpiring in 3 days than i had the past 5 years. Great experience. It's amazing how much difference the little things make.

Interesting scenario. But not entirely unlikely. 1st - since I am observing this from A position, as soon as coaches start coming out I know we have a situation. As CC I may, more than likely, bring the crew together to find out our situation immediately after the coach questions the sitch. The order of events and calls will even have me asking questions. I will need to hear what each guy has, put that with what I observed on the play and go from there. Since R3 committed INT on F5 with an IFF sitch, both the INT and the IFF call belong to the PU (IFF if fair). That being said, I'm going to ask the PU when the INT occurred. ln his opinion, did it occur prior to the IFF being established? I would have a good look at it also so I could chime in. I will also get U2s thoughts. What we will determine is if the criteria for the IFF was met prior to the INT. If it was then we will get both outs under FED and possibly NCAA. If it wasn't then we will get the out on R3 and place BR at 1st moving other runners up. Under OBR, since the INT call came first, the IFF did not come into play. Either way, I will explain the ruling to both coaches and let the chips fall where they may. There will be a thorough post game covering rules and responsibilities for plays such as these. UmpTTS43, I was reading through this and wanted to double check the thinking on this. I ump HS ball as well. You would get two outs by NFHS rules if the IFF was established before the INT because an out has been made, and then you get the out for R3's INT? If the INT occurs before the call of IFF it's only the out on R3 because of the INT, the IFF can't take effect because the ball is dead on the INT? What happens on the case of the ball is right on the line, you call "IFF if fair", but the INT occurs and the ball is dead and then the IFF never had the chance to happen for sure. Do you still get both outs? Also to check my understanding. If there is no IFF in effect, and R3 inteferes with a foul pop up. R3 is out and B/R goes back to bat. If it's a fair pop up, R3 is out and B/R is awarded first. Hope that makes sense. GreyhoundAggie 6 yrs TASO
