I want to make sure that I understand this properly. The jump step was legal and not the reason for the balk. Since the jump step is considered an engaged move, he had to throw to first once he stepped towards the base. Since he essentially feinted and then threw to first, that was the reason for the balk.

At the annual rules interpretation meeting for FED umpires, the interrupter said that the proper way to respond to a coach's request to check the other teams gear is to say "Absolutely, right after I'm done checking yours. Please get your bats and helmets ready for inspection."

When I removed instep plate from the my wilson shin guards, I was able to leave the rivets in place. From the back, I drilled a small pilot hole down the middle of the rivet. I then used a larger bit to remove enough of the backside of the rivet so that I could pry the small washer off. Once the washer is off, the strap for the instep plate lifts right off. I used mill file to remove the sharp edges off the remaining part of the rivet, and then a ball pein hammer to round it over so the rivet would stay in place. The key to drilling the rivet is to go slow and steady with medium pressure. That will keep the heat down and should prevent any melting.

Triguy29, congratulations!!! I plan to take the PIAA test in June. Hopefully I will find similar success. I have a PIAA cap sitting on my desk. I haven't put it on yet. It serves as a visible reminder of my goal.

Okay, so the thing that makes this different between the different rule sets, is the "through or by" interpretation in the OBR. In FED and college, the ball is considered to have gone "through or by" a fielder since they were playing up, that's why it remains a live ball and the runner isn't out when he gets hit by the batted ball. But in OBR its not "through or by", since it didn't pass within the immediate vicinity of a fielder, and the runner is out because he was hit by the batted ball. Is that correct?

Do the rulings change if the situation is nearly the same, but this time the runners are taking a lead off the bases? BTW, I love this type of thread as I typically learn a lot from them. I'm thinking that R2 is out in all rulings, R3 remains at 3B, R1 goes to 2B, and the BR gets 1B. Bases loaded, none out and the infield is drawn in to the grass. B4 hits a line drive up the middle that nails R2, who is standing on just off second base. No infielder had a chance to make a play. Rulings: OBR: NCAA: FED:

I'm guessing that the relationship between umpire and coach will change greatly depending on the level of ball. For example, in a youth rec league, there will hopefully be a learning attitude like the one pointed out by grayhawk and kyle. But as the level of ball moves up into youth tournaments, JV, Legion, HS, college, etc, the interaction between umpires and coaches will become more business like and less informal. Don't get me wrong, I think an umpire needs to be professional at all times, but having a conversation with a coach after a game about why what his pitcher did was a balk, would best be left for the most junior levels of play.

This is the explanation that finally made it clear for me. Plus now I can use this line of reasoning to help me with future obstruction situations. Thanks.

He should be at bat. I think your group is confusing it with this scenario: Baker BOO - no one notices. Baker hits and moves to 1st. Daniel comes to bat, 1st pitch legalizes Baker, proper batter is Charles. Daniel hits and moves to 1st, Baker moves to 2nd. Defense appeals BOO. Proper batter is out - Charles is out. Baker returns to 1st. Next proper batter is Daniel. He now bats again as the proper batter.

I had a coach tell me about a similar play that he liked to run. With an R3 and the pitcher starting his delivery towards home, he has the batter lower the bat to his side while turning his body towards the pitcher along with having him give the pitcher a quizzical look. He claims that this will sometimes get the pitcher to stop his delivery and hence get a balk. Since the batter didn't leave the box, what's the proper way to handle this? Is it a balk? If the pitcher ends up deliverying the ball, just call it as a ball or strike based on its location, or should it be an automatic strike?

Good advice about base umpire location during a pitching change. I too have learned something. Though what about the PU? I'm thinking he should move up one of the foul lines but he should also make sure that he's in front of the dugout of the team in the field. That way he won't have to listen to any chirping form the team that is at bat. Or should he remain behind home plate during the warm up throws?

At this point, that's the understanding that I have. Even if there is no possible play on the BR when a FPSR violation occurs, the player in violation and the BR are both out.

This thread has been dormant for awhile, but I have a question about the FPSR at home. I am reading the FED "Rules by Topic", and one of the case plays isn't clear on the penalties. 2.32.2 SITUATION C: On a force play slide at the plate, the runner slides over (beyond the plate) and makes contact with F2. Is the runner guilty of violating the force play slide rule? RULING: Yes. A runner is expected to stop short of the back edge of home plate, the same as he would at other bases. Had the runner not made contact or altered the play, there would have been no violation. The case play doesn't go on to explain the penalties. Based on my understanding I believe that the runner at home is out, the run doesn't score, and the BR is out as well. Is that correct?

I got the Wilson Charcoals as a primary set, and a pair of the Diamond Featherweights for doing youth ball. Question about the Featherweights. They have ankle pads that conflict with my NB450s. The pads flare out to the sides so it looks like there are wings on my shoes. My plan is to cut off some of the ankle pads so that the front of the guards will sit down nice and tight to the TOP of my shoes. I figure that my ankles will still be protected by the shoes. Is this a bad idea?
