Personally, if I make a call and a manager wants to talk about it, I fully expect him to come to ME, not my partner. If he does go to my partner, I expect my partner to direct him to me. Having these types of discussions with coaches is going to help younger and less-experienced umpire learn way more about handling situations than having you do it for him. JMHO

I agree with noumpere. You can't change a call on a catch/no-catch with runners on and less than 2 outs. You can't fairly place runners because you have no idea where they would have ended up. IMO, you have to eat this one. Can't change it to benefit the defense and hurt the offense.

I've never, nor would I ever, work a game without a chest protector, I don't care how hot it is.

Whether he was trying to show you up or not is one of the things you need to be able to decide. Saying "that's horseSH*#" may not be trying to show you up. Are you going to throw a coach out for saying "that's terrible?" Probably not, but he's essentially telling you the same thing, just with a nicer word. Like Tim said, if he uses "you" or "you're," it changes everything.

Yes, if the on-deck batter is dumb enough to stand right next to the same spot I need to be, I'll tell him, "Look out!" If he doesn't move, I move him.

We very rarely work solo in my area. When we do, it's usually because our partner is running late or couldn't make it at the last minute. If I'm told ahead of time that it's a solo game, I'll pass.

I'll move the bat if I have time, but most of the time the catcher will kick it out of the way before I can even get a chance.

Anything HS or above, I use the coaches or managers names, and I expect them to use mine. Anything lower than that, I try to use their names if I remember them.

If you go looking for it, trouble will find you. If you don't go looking for it, trouble will still probably find you, just maybe not as quickly. I'm my own worst critic, so if I have a rough game or have problems with a coach, I just try I forget about it and move on.

Agree with the others...new day, new game. Try not to carry over emotions or something from a previous game into the next one.

Too quick IMO. I don't think he was trying to show you up. At that 18U level, some of those coaches are college coaches, which is a whole different animal. I agree with the advice Mike gave earlier...reading other ejection "stories" will give you a better sense for what is EJ worthy and, depending on the level, what a HC can get away with. Assistants are given very little rope.

In Missouri, coaches are required to rate officials for each varsity game they have (1 being the best, 5 the worst.) At the end of the season, we are given an average rating (2.4, for example.) But we are never told or shown game-by-game our ratings or which coach gave us which rating and so on. It's a joke of a system, when they have no idea what they are evaluating us on in the first place.

By what you have described, I don't think I've got anything. It's hard to tell without seeing it actually happen, but F1 merely moving his head is nothing.

I plan on attending one of them, just having a tough time trying to decide which one is right for me. Will let you know when I decide.

I've heard a guy say "Boom" on a technical in basketball last year, but I don't use it for ejections in baseball. Still waiting to get the opportunity to use Iassogna's line of "he got you right there, BANG!"

If he says that to me at the plate meeting, he doesn't get a warning. Automatic.

I don't carry or use one at all on the bases, and I have one in my ball bag but don't use it behind the plate. I guess I have it with me just in case. I seem to stay more focused without one behind the plate, and normally have a good idea of what the count is when I'm on the bases. As Rich said earlier, if the PU is coming to me for on a regular basis, but don't ask me more than once a game. (we don't work with the same guy all the time.)

The only time I don't get an email from Arbiter is when a game is cancelled. Anyone else having this issue?

I had a kid in a SR legion game hit one right off the plate. It bounced straight up in the air, the catcher caught it, and tagged BR who is standing in the box yelling, "It's foul! It hit the plate!" I proceeded to call him out and laugh out loud almost simultaneously.

The only time i can think you might need to ask is if you're at a 45 degree angle from 1b and f3 is being pulled off the bag straight toward you. Even then you can probably get a step to either side and see it,

You should "never" get together with a partner just to appease a coach. If you're in "A," you should never have to get help for a pulled foot, you're right there, make your own call.

First of all, I was implying that this whole argument, for the most part, is stupid. Not you, and I apologize if you took it personally. That was certainly not my intention. That being said, I don't recall you saying anything about the reasons I gave you for not doing it (your responsibilities as the BU), except that if you were evaluated and it was mentioned to not clean off the bases, that you would oblige. No one here has never said that it is not permissible for the BU to clean off the bases. If you want to spray paint the bases every half inning, go for it. But if you look in any umpire manual that I can think of, I can almost guarantee you where it lists "Base Umpire Responsibilities," you won't find 'cleaning bases' anywhere.

If a catcher sets up and catches a pitch 4-6" outside, but sticks it and doesn't really have to move his mitt, reward the pitcher and call it a strike, The dugouts have no idea how far outside it is. Make the batters swing the bat.

Camps and clinics are certainly a great way to get a consistent zone beaten (figuratively, of course) into your head. Just out of curiosity, Scott, which camps or clinics have you attended?

They just showed a clip where HPU Steve Mattingly had conversation with the LSU catcher regarding him trying show up Steve (just turned the game on, so I'm not sure what happened,) but it was very casual where Steve was just brushing off the plate and acting normal while warning the LSU catcher. The color announcer was saying that the conversation was unnecessary since no one else knew what was going on...duh, that's the entire point of what he did!
