I haven't seen anything in the FED book that addresses it, either; I've heard it discussed along the same lines as the 'last time by' interp., however. Agreed re: 'accepted unwritten interpretation'.

DING! DING! DING! Well said, Mr. Taylor. I can think of only one worse case: the guy who claims to have read the rulebook and/or mechanics manual, but once he's on the field, it's readily evident that he has not. :confused:

While I don't bring the whole library with me, I also keep my CCA manual in the car, most especially for pre/post game clarification. It has come in handy most recently when trying to ensure that partners know about the BU getting the 2nd play at 3rd base when the ball's in the infield. Agreed re: the respect issue. That's a whole 'nother multi-page thread waiting to happen. :confused:

Well, I figured that abandonment might be grasping at straws, but I'm wondering where the 'gross miss' is covered there ... and in FED, for that matter. :confused:

I used to tell coaches that as well. "Go read Section x, y, z..." But then I quit doing that after learning that most coaches can't read. BA-DA-BOOM! My first pre-season dig at the rats! Thanks, thanks, very much, I'll be here all season. :confused:

Well I assumed from the revised that R1 went BACK to first. The emphasis made in the revised was that R1 missed second, and that's what I focused on. If he didn't go back and touch first, and instead headed to second..... well, holy rat poop, Batman, that's a "no SH*#, Sherlock" appeal - he HAS to go back and touch 1B... criminy, why even bother asking that? Of course he can be called out on appeal at first! What the hey? All the talk about second base and overthrown ball still being live is all gobbledy-gook if R1 doesn't re-touch first base!

Yes. In your sitch, it's irrelevant whether the ball was live or not. Either way, his touch of 2nd base has been corrected.

Well said, Warren, very well said! Mr. Campbell, there is a big difference between working a game in a professional manner and being an OOO. Perhaps you might provide some examples of what these "overly professional" partners have done to make you deride them?

JM's response gives the same reasons I would give, though I would add that coaches that see you bring out a book on the field will now be given license to start a debate about how a rule is worded, etc. etc. etc. It's simply a bad idea. Picture an umpire, flippping from page to page to page, trying to find the "right" rule to apply in a given situation, and then here comes Mr. Coach to add in his two cents. The bottom line is that an umpire shouldn't NEED the book on the field. Like the other guys that have posted, I also carry mine in the car, and I have on occassion referenced it AFTER a game, if a question lingered about a particular play; but on the field? NEVER.

Not only no, but HELL NO! Back when I first began umpiring, (1991), I attended a clinic that was led by several AA and AAA umpires. A couple of them worked the Eastern League, and they related how they had (back then) been required to carry their book ON THEIR PERSON during a game. So, their association leadership complied, and each umpire carried their rule book in the back right pocket. There is was, folded over at least twice, with maybe 1/4 roll of duct tape securing it. I later learned that requirement went away by the end of that season. :WTF

Stay at it, John. And bear in mind that even 20 games a year is plenty enough; you as an umpire are there to maintain the integrity of the game. The fact that you're here looking for assistance leaves me to believe that you do indeed "give a damn" about the game, and that attitude is outstanding. The game of baseball needs more umpires with that approach. Don't put up with coaches mouthing off. Some of the things you've mentioned here (grousing about the strike zone, for one) are ejectionable offenses. It goes like this: 1) Coach gripes about the zone. Ignore it. 2) Coach gripes about the zone a second time. You look at him to let him know you've heard what he's said. (Say nothing verbally). 3) Coach gripes a 3rd time about the zone. You tell him: "That's enough. We're not going to do that today." 4) Coach continues to gripe: YOU TOSS HIM. HE'S DONE. You've given him enough rope - now he's hung himself. John, you've received some excellent advice from several posters / umpires here; I hope you will continue on and put it to good use. Also: Make every attempt to find a clinic near you and attend it. Ask the local veterans how to best handle coaches. 99.9% of umpires, regardless of their length of service to the game, will try to help you. Best of luck! B)
