I'm a hockey ref, I was watching a tournament out by me this year. Joe Sacic and Adam Foote had their 12 year olds on the same team. They went undefeated to the championship and won it, all games were no closer than 10 goal differentials. DL

I've got an EJ on all 3. Make sure to report this assclown to the association. DL

I tried both in a few games(gold and platinum), and another person on this board summed it up best. I used to support the platinum...until I tried the Gold...then i was sold on gold. For my umpire style(I use a box, with a bit of a forward lean), the platinum just didn't fit snugly enough for my to feel safe around the collar bone. It flared outward with my forward lean. I switched to the gold, and haven't had that feeling since. The gold fits snugly, and right where I want it to be. Don't have to adjust it during the game, it's like I don't even know it's there, and as for the "bulkiness" issue you brought up, I found the Platinum to be bulkier because of that added front pad. The Gold has a bit more size over the shoulders, but it's very fitting down the front. DL

Best part abut the umpirehook.com video is the fact that the "intro" picture is of an ump cleaning the plate and HOLDING HIS MASK!!!!! DL

The association I used to be in charged $105/season, regardless of if you got games from them or not...I was sick of paying that much as a college student doing maybe 10 games/year, so I started my own association, no assignor fee, and now I assign 2 different leagues, approx. 400 games/season. DL

Well, I managed to do it yesterday...very close play at first, could have gone either way. I get into position, he's sssaaaaaoouuutttt...with my left arm out like safe, and my right up like out.....so close I crossed up my entire body...ended up calling the out on the premise the runner must beat the throw, and this is as close as I've ever seen to a "tie" at the base. Thought I'd share. DL

Make sure it's a verbal yes, not just a nod of the head. DL

Had this at my game Sunday, still trying to figure out if I got it right. R1 , # of outs don't matter. FED rules R1 attempts to steal Second. F4 goes to take the throw, but is taken approx. 15 feet to the 1b side of the base, and right into the baseline. He drops to his knees to field the ball, and the runner, instead of running through/aroundF4, hurdles him. I call time, and think over the situation, I know I've seen in the rulebook somewhere about hurdling a fielder. In FED book, it's 8-4-2.b.2. I didn't remember the penalty for it, so I sent the runner back to 1st for hurdling a fielder that wasn't lying on the ground. I come home, pull out the rulebook, and see that the rule is under the "sliding" section. My 2 questions are this: 1. Was the hurdle legal since it was no where near the vicinity of where the runner would slide into a base? 2. If it was illegal, it says that penalty is runner is out. Do you call out a 10 y.o. when no one has a clear grasp of the rule, and at that age, the players don't have a good grasp on the game? Thanks! DL

Played from age 5 thru present. Played last year for my college's team, transferring this year, don't know if we have a team... DL

I've had mine for 15 games now, nothing but a glancing blow to the shoulder....and 8 shots to the mask...... I've been asking for a good shot to my gear for a while now, nothing to the CP, enough to the head, arms, hands, and thighs........:bang:

I had a good one the other day, the 2 best teams in the local travel league division are squaring off at the 12u age group. The first 5 1/2 innings get done in 1 hr. 8 min. :2cents:B)B) Go to the bottom of 6. score is 0-0. Home team comes up, takes the lead by 3, so go to top 7, 3-0 home team leading, visiting team comes up, gets 2 quick outs, loads the bases on 2 infield errors, and then this kid, who's all of 4 ft. nothing, and 60 lbs soaking wet, jacks one over the left field wall, which is 220 ft. I sit there, jaw on the ground, team swarms the kid, they're happy, we continue, they finish the inning out. middle of the 7th, 4-3 visitors. Home team comes up, walks the bases loaded on 12 straight pitches. coach comes out, puts in new f1. infield in, ground ball to f6, bobbles it, throw to home is late, tie game. 2 quick ground outs to f5, who takes it home, and now we have bases loaded, 2 out, tie game. HT's bottom of the line-up is now up, they were a combined 0 for 11 on the day. Kid comes up, 2 quick strikes, 3rd pitch comes in. drills the kid in the back, brings home the winning run! Now here's where it gets REALLY weird. I have these same teams 2 days later, it's the EXACT same situation, except score was 8-8 going into bottom 6(all previous runs scored in the first 2 innings). Home team takes lead in bottom 6, visitors rally, take lead by 1 in top 7. Same kid who got plunked the last game, comes to the plate, 2 out, r1 and r2, kid hits a single to right center, lead runner scores easily, f9 gets to the ball as trail runner is halfway between 2nd and 3rd, he throws a bullet to the cut-off, so I'm figuring they're going to hold the runner at third...WRONG, I see this guy giving him the windmill to go home, I'm thinking o SH*#, couldn't you just hold him, now we're going to extras....WRONG AGAIN...the cutoff sailed the catcher by about 50 feet....he threw it over a 25 foot high backstop 45 feet behind home plate!!!!! another walk-off for the same kid...whatta few days that was. HSM solved the issue for me

Just the other day, took 5 foul balls and a bat to the mask...had a BAD headache after the game...thankfully, no concussion symptoms. My other bad one was a foul ball to the left forearm. Had the laces imprinted, and my arm swelled up during the same at bat. DL

Thanks for the catch...was typing this on my phone between games, should be top 3, 1 out...this was right after ringing the kid up with the call on the corner, the K was the 1st out of the inning. Thanks DL

I kind of understand where TJ is coming from...if the quality of the throw doesn't matter, then shouldn't it become interference as soon as the ball is thrown? You have all components, throw to F3, BR is out of the lane, the fielder executes the throw , and it COULD cause the throw to go wild, but that doesn't matter, as quality of the throw doesn't matter, so wouldn't it be INT immediately after the fielder releases the ball? and INT is NOT a DBB in fed, correct? Therefore, you call TIME as soon as the throw is made, call INT, BR out, all runners back to where they started. Not saying I agree with this rule, I think it(the whole damn book) is worded like just DL

Well, for me personally, I'm in quite the odd situation here, I'm also the assignor for the teams from my town's league...It's a really weird set up. We have our own "league" in our town, of 14 teams, spread through 5 different ages, these teams never play each other, it's just an "organization" to get blocks of field times a lot easier, as well as get discounts, rather than having 14 individual teams try to get fields. All of these teams are part of the area's travel league. I'm on the board of my town's league, and I KNOW they have my back, the heat that's coming is from the "area" league director, who put heat on our "local" league president, who passed it down to me, so I don't really think there's going to be any "pulling out" in our area, but it will be interesting to see just how far the "area" league wants to push this issue, because I can guarantee, they will run into problems if they try to come after me(as an ump, not an assignor). I don't know how to make this situation clear, and I know it's a mess, let me know if you have any questions about the set-up, and I'll do my best to answer them. I'll keep you guys informed. DL
