  1. HOORAY for instant replay!!!! I WANT to work some BS youth game that has a two hour time limit and instant replay! What a blessing! I would ask for it CONSTANTLY! I would ENCOURAGE IT! Me: "He's out!" Coach: That's ok, Johnny. He only got you by a step. Me: OOOOOH! That sounds like a challenge! Let's go to the film! We would have one hour of baseball, one hour of replay, and I get paid the same! How cool is that? Of course, all replays must take place in the shade with a cold drink in my hand. Coaches and fans and MLB and ESPN should be careful what they wish for! Baseball has an awful lot of "reviewable" plays. . . Come to think of it, maybe I'd just find something else to do with my free time since baseball does not need my experience, training, effort, or judgment. Pete

  2. Come out from behind the plate, out of the circle, in fair territory and observe. I will usually watch BR round and touch first and look for any possible OBS. This is not my responsibility, but in the event of a gross miss by my partner from not watching, I may be able to help if needed. If the throw comes into 2nd, I observe. If the throw goes back into 1st, I move towards the 1st base line for a possible overthrow. If the throw goes to 3rd, I move towards that line for the possible overthrow. If the BR commits to 3rd base, I will move to point of plate in order to get overthrow responsibilities and be ready to adjust if runner comes home. As the play develops, I also look out for possible rundown situations between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd. If I read that this is a possibility, I can start to move that way in the event it does develop. Even though BU has runner into 3rd, you are still umpiring.

  3. That is the FED mechanic. And it's ridiculous. When does the BU release to home? When the runner commits to third? What if he stops and gets in a rundown between second and third? It's a terrible mechanic. Have I mentioned I don't like that mechanic?

  4. I'd better not ever catch you commenting negatively on people who don't read the rule book. Or do you want them to not read the book so you can pontificate on your resultant superiority?

  5. My usual response when this question flares its ugly head is "we're both going to find that out here in just a minute".

  6. Or like your typical response - "Go look it up". personally I prefer the whacky to the unctuous, but to each his own.

  7. You can not carry over what happened in a previous game. When the game is over it is over and your start with a clean slate. I don't know if the coach saying "That's one" is ejection worthy if that is all he said. You also don't explain how he approached you or where he was. If it was something that was worthy of a warning in a previous game, you should have warned again. New game, New Warning. +1 You have to let it go one game to the next.

  8. No, it does not work okay in the LLWS. It is a total joke. I could be wrong, but it seems that the coaches are allowed to ask for a review on pretty much anything they want. The LLWS was a joke before IR, now it's even worse. The funny thing is watching them huddle on judgement plays just because a coach asks them to, then we get to hear the announcers talk about how LLWS umpires are great because they are working hard to "Get it right". :rantoff:

  9. Redneck_ump's post got me thinking about our kids and how they like to mimic us. I then thought of a photo that I had taken this last spring. My daughter had found my plate brush in the garage with my gear airing out. She took it outside with her and started doing this on the ground. Think somebody has been watching her dad umpire? I admit, my heart swelled up with pride a little bit. It's also a good reminder that our kids are always watching us. Just wanted to share.

  10. My 4 year old loves to come watch me umpire. She was even showing the UIC her strike three mechanic last weekend. Her favorite part is to help me clean my shoes when I get home, Momma lets her stay up late to wait for me to get home so she can help clean my shoes. She loves to spray the Murphy's Oil, but usually gets more on myself than she does on the shoes...

  11. A. His L/S was in the wash, and was too warm to wear a jacket. B. He doesn't care. C. Half of you reading this will actually think it's the new "cool", and start wearing this combo tomorrow night, with your $800 Nike mask.

  12. Runner is out for being in the umpire's path and ejected for excessive embarrassment to umpire. I don't have a rule cite.
