Our JV coach got away with this yesterday. Visiting player gets hit in the hand, umpire starts to send him to first. Coach yells, "HANDS ARE PART OF THE BAT! IT'S IN THE RULE BOOK!". Umpire actually brings the batter back and puts him in the box:WTF Player didn't swing, just tried to avoid the pitch. Visiting coach says NOT ONE WORD. I almost choked I was laughing so hard inside. I whispered to our scorekeeper, "Ever seen a bat with hands?" Same game, a visiting parent wants to know why our player at second base is not tagging the base after every pitch. Almost choked then also.

OK coach, Make sure your teams leaves their hands in the dugout next inning then.

Hey, don't razz the coach - they're supposed to be ignorant.

How about the umpire that CHANGED HIS RULING based on what an ignoramus told him? :WTF:wow: :TD:

That's a wow for the coach, a double wow for the umpire.

This is why we can't shake myths like this. I saw an umpire call a kid out for carrying his bat to first. :WTF :wow:

This morning: low pitch: batter ducks: ball bounces off his helmet. I hear from the stands " "Blue, the helmet's part of the Bat!".

Did someone have one too many adult beverages last night? Wow.

We're always taught to teach those others who are less fortunate than us, i.e. players, coaches, and bleacher creatures (pun intended) the correct way to remember IF the hands are part of the bat, to wit, " The hands are never part of bat because when you bought the bat, did the hands come with it?" or some similar catchy axiom.:givebeer:

Memorial Day Rule Quiz:

But is the above axiom always true? When/why not?

Fisrt correct answer wins an all expense paid trip to your own beer cooler:givebeer:

How about when they swing at the ball?

No. B/c if they swing the bat, then the ball is dead and a strike is called regardless of where the ball went. So, they are still not considered to be part of the bat or then it wouldn't matter if the ball hit them while swinging.

The only time I can think of the hands being part of the bat is when I don't see the ball hit them. Other than that, I can't think of how they would be part of the bat off the top of my head.

Moblue dings it!

Then, I will have to disagree that the hands ever become part of the bat. Simply b/c if that were true, then a "dead ball" strike would not be called.

Batter swings at the pitch and the ball hits his hands. Then, goes to F1 who proceeds to throw him out. Ruling: Ball is dead as soon as it hit the hand and is just a strike, not an out unless on the 3rd strike.

So, the hands NEVER become considered to be part of the bat.

Is this true in FED rules as well? I thought is was playable if the ball goes into fair territory.

I'll leave the FED experts to answer that one again.:angel4:

But, if they do, that is crazy and asking for someone to get hurt. I mean imagine a batter just got his hand hit. Now, he has to run to 1B. Maybe his hand is fractured but he tries for 1B and trips or slides in. Now, he may have just broke his hand completely.

I don't know if it is a FED rule but it would be a stupid one asking for trouble.:bang::BD::banghead:

It is true for FED. The ball is dead (RIP little guy) the moment it touches the batter (including the hands, unless they were purchased with the bat in which case:bang:).

Correct , it is a swinging, dead ball strike and that was my whole point. You have to be ready to defend this situation/rule when it comes up and here comes rat coach arguing, challenging you on "but you said hands are not part of the bat!", ect ect..

Nope, when the ball touches the batter for ANY reason, the ball is a dead ball situation. What you do with it depends on where or how it touches the batter. This true in any rule set.
