  1. When I say starts his motion, it is the normal motion to come into the set position. Can a pitcher step towards third and not throw the ball? I say yes he can but our group is saying its a balk. We've all seen the feint to third and throw to first, same thing even if doesn't throw to first...
  2. NHSF rules Runner on third, right handed pitcher is in the stretch, starts his motion, pauses, lifts his non pivot foot, steps towards third but does not throw the ball. (He does not step off with his pivot foot) Is this a Balk?
  3. Ok lets say the pitcher brought his arms together over his head like he is going to start his normal pitching sequence but he steps back with his pivot foot and throws to first to try to put out the runner.
  4. I argued that at our meeting. The only thing I found was in 6-2-5, It is also a balk when a runner or runners on base and the pitcher, while he is not touching the pitchers plate, makes any movement associated with his pitch... The argument was that the pitcher is trying to deceive the runner with his arm motions so its a balk. Thank you for your responses...
  5. High school rules - runner on first, pitcher sets up in the wind-up position with both feet on the rubber and arms to his side. He brings his hands together (pitching motion) as he steps off the rubber with his pivot foot to try to deceive the runner on first. Is this a Balk?
  6. Had a wierd situation that I had never encountered in the 12 years of doing high school baseball. Local tournament chapionship game: A team from El PasoTexas was playing in a NM tournament, they huddled up every half inning before going out to play defense. I kept asking them to hustle out but was pretty much ignored ( i was on the bases and my partner behind the dish was acting like no big deal). They would take between 3-5 min between innings. Top of the 7th 3hrs and 10 minutes into the game. After 2 minutes huddled up they took the field and after two pitches I said balls in they ignored me. I walked up to the first baseman and told him balls in. he ignoredme and kept throwing the ball around. I looked at the head coach and told him we need to finish this game was again ignored. What would you do in this situation?

  8. Got invited to call the NM State Championships again...Looking foward to a week of good baseball... :rock
  9. At a FED State championship game two years ago I had a banger at 3rd base. The coach yells from the dugout "you gotta be kiding me" he calls time and stomps his way to third base. When he gets to me he tells me Mr. umpire you made the right call, i'm just here to get my team going. He asked me how I was enjoying the tournament and where I was from, after a quick conversation he throws his hands up in the air and walked back to his dugout shaking his head. They ended up winning the state championship. guess it worked for him...
  10. I agree it's wrong, but what would be the call?
  11. FED rules I had a catcher set up right behind the dish to where the batter would sometimes hit his glove while taking warm up swings (before the pitch). When the pitcher started his wind up the catcher would tap the batter on the knee and then back up to his position. Would this be unsportsmanlike conduct? Catchers obstruction??? I stopped him from doing that with just a warning but was wondering if I should have done more...
  12. I had the same problem at my first varsity game this year, It seemed like I was in a bubble and couldn't see beyond what was immediately in front of me. I called a few high strikes that were questionable and started questioning my strike zone especially when the crowd started groaning. Made it thru the game but I chalked it down as a bad game for me. My partner told me to shake it off, it happens...

  14. Yeah I meant F4 Thanks for the replies
  15. Page 54 8-4-2k1 If a runner is touching his base when he is hit by an infield fly, he is not out, but the batter is out by a IFFR. the ball is dead, even in the exception. What I read is; dead ball the runner is not out, if it's less than two outs batter is out in IFFR, but what if there two outs? The OP doesn't state how many out there are...what am I missing?
  16. Bases loaded, batter hits a high pop fly that is easily catchable, but hits the runner who is standing on second base. a - dead ball batter out b - dead ball both the batter and runner on second are out c - dead ball only runner is out d - live ball no out are yet declared The question didn't state how many outs there were so I guess in this case it doesn't matter...my thoughts are since this could be an easy out and force outs at any base, the runner on second should not be required to leave the base so not to interfere with DP. The book states that during and IFF if the runner is hit on base it is not an out. What's the call?
  17. Federation With one out and a runner on first base, B4 allows the fair fly ball to drop untouched to the ground. a ball is dead batter is out b ball is dead and runner on 1st is out c Ball is live and no one is out yet d The runner and batter-runner are awarded one base. This is a tricky question at least to me, the book states if the ball is "intentionally" dropped the ball is dead and all runners return. The question states that it was "allowed" to drop. The book also states that the batter is not out if the infielder "permits" the ball to drop untouched to the ground, except when IFF is in effect. Page 52 8-4-1c1 So how do we differenciate intentional and permit on a dropped ball?
  18. This is in the FED test: With a runner on first base, The batter hits a ground ball to B4. B4 attempts to tag the runner advancing from first, but misses him. B4 then throws to first but sails the ball into the dugout. The runner and batter-runner are awarded: a Two bases from thier position at the time of the pitch b Two bases from the time of the throw c two bases from when the ball became dead d one base. My first initial thought was two bases from the time of the pitch because it was the first throw, but the failed attempted play/tag on the runner could be considered the initial play, so the subsequent play is the throw to first, which makes it after the throw... Thoughts???

  20. FED- count 3-2, B1 swings and the ball hits him on the fore arm never touching the bat and goes into fair territory...
  21. Hell... according to the fans we should "ALL" be wearing glasses... Ha ha
  22. Quote: What is the best way to handle when a partner asks for help in a live, play under action scenario like this when you don't have a definitive answer? I would ignore the request and follow the play. Once the play is over, you have a discussion with the PU and fix it if needed...
  23. You mean "tie doesn't go to the runner"? :GL:
  24. This year during a very intense varsity HS game, I was behind the dish and called a pitch "STRIKE" then realized that it wasn't a stike . I immediately took my lid off and called "BALL, THAT WAS A BALL", I looked at the OC and apologized for the wrong call. After the 1/2 inning as he walked by me laughing and said he'd never seen that before, I laughed and said i've never done that before and apologized again for the brain fart. He said no problem it was a ball...:angel4:
  25. I would gladly take any rain here in Southwest NM, it hasn't rained here in 3 months...
