You're right:nod:...I was concerned with the outcome in a play like that. But what sold the call was being able to explain the call with confidence (not arrogance). It's like getting a shot, you're hating the anticipation of the pain but when it's done it didn't even hurt. :crazy:

This brings up a funny thing that happen to me this year. I was PU in a very intense HS Play-off rival game the score was 1-1 bottom of the 8th inning, the crowd was so loud you could barely hear my balls and strike calls, so I had to raise my voice when calling. One of the coaches asked "what the count, Blue?" I turned and yelled out " I GOT TWO BALLS" It seemed like just as I said that, the crowd quieted down so it rang out pretty loud. The fans that heard me started busting out "are you sure blue" "Prove it". It was pretty funny...

I enjoy talking and joking with the catchers... when I miss a strike on the corner I usually tell the catcher that I blew that pitch and they say "it's cool blue; just don't miss it again" ha ha. As far as framing, I love watching a good catcher work. Like said before they make it easy to call that strike that is kissing the corners. When they try to bring in a ball that is obviously outside the corners, I jokingly tell them " now your reaching son" they usually get a kick out of it.

Wouldn't you know it...after all this discussion about the missed first base mechanics and it never happening, well it happen to me last night. Close play at first and the runner did not touch the bag...i called safe...and the DC told the F3 to tag the runner because he missed first base, F3 tagged him (before he got back to the bag) and I called him out. OC of course wanted to know why i called him safe in the first place. I simply told him that that was the mechanics for that situation. he said OK... After the game I explained to the coaches the (because they were curious) right mechanics and told about the lenghty discussion here on this board about that particular situation. .

When a coach argues that tie goes to the runner. When coaches want to do I/O 5 minutes before game time. When coaches tell me that they haven't got a call all year and want me make up for it. To name a few

Here's one that happen on Saturday... Batter hits a line drive to F6 which deflects off his glove and continues to the outfield where it goes underneath the outfield fence. OC what's the BR to have 3B because it delected off an infielders glove before it went under the fence:shrug:. DC is screaming ground rule double:tantrum:...Fans are screaming HR:banghead:...The umpires ultimately called it a ground rule double. What's the correct call? What if the outfielder touched it as well before it goes under the fence?

I agree with Jboval...your just asking for an ass chewing by calling him out after an appeal is made:BD:. The coaches are going to want to know why you just didn't call him out in the first place for not touching the bag, then trying to explain the rule which is vague and nowhere clearly defined. Does anyone have any pull with the committe that revises rules every few years?

Does anyone know where I can find literature on 3 man mechanics (federation)? I have three games this weekend and want to go over it again. I've done 3 man a couple times in USSSA but it's been awhile. thanks

If i'm not mistaken that bunt attempt rule was changed this year in federation. Now, even if you leave the bat still over the plate it is a strike. 2009 NFHS Softball rules changes: 2-8-2 The definition of a bunt attempt was changed to require the bat to be withdrawn in order to take a pitch.

Two questions for illegal bats, High school federation. I've noticed that some teams like to put a strip of white or black tape on the bat right where it starts increasing in width from the neck to the barrel. I guess it's to stop it from hurting a players hands if they hit the ball with the neck of the bat. Is this tape legal? #2 Bats that have lost (chipped) some of the paint on the barrel from players hitting thier cleats when at bat. I've seen bats that have lost almost half the paint, the certification is still visible just the paint is chipped. Legal or Illegal???? Thanks T

Thanks Kid and Mr.U My first reaction was to call an out, but one of the other officials basically said the same thing as MR. U. I agree now, call safe. thanks again...

Here's one we've been chewing over the last few meetings. High school baseball Batter hits the ball to F6, F6 bobbles the ball which creates a close play at first. The BR passes first base before the ball gets there but does not touch the bag. The ball get there shortly after and the F3 touches the bag. What are the BU mechanics? Does he /she call safe or out because the runner never touched the bag, is it a no call??? Half of the crew says you call safe and wait for a defensive appeal, some say you call out because he never touched the bag. What are your thoughts? T
