beerguy55 Posted March 27 Report Posted March 27 I know it's slow pitch, but - this weekend: Lou Berliner Sports Park 31 diamonds 55 umpires 400+ teams 1000+ games I've been TD for tourneys with three diamonds and a dozen umpires...I'm breaking into hives thinking about the logistics of this puppy. As a UIC, is it easier or harder having everyone in one place like this? Quote
wolfe_man Posted March 27 Report Posted March 27 One place? Yes, but it's a little over a mile from end to the other in length. You'd need a golf cart to get around from field-to-field. It's huge! I can't imagine being the TD for something this big. It really is a neat place and the City of Columbus has done a good job making it nice. https://columbusrecparks.com/facilities/rentals/sports/berliner-2/ 2 Quote

On-site coordination may seem daunting, because of volume (quantity), but it's much, much easier when you can confine logistics to the site itself. When you introduce a second site, everything doubles in complexity, and it further burdens you because you have to split (or delegate) your authority (in logistical decision-making). You will have injuries, you will have absences, you will have issues. It is much easier to have one big "chess board" than to have several "smaller" chess boards. I've never been an overall UIC / Assigner for an event that big; but, I have been a site-UIC / "lieutenant" for gentlemen who are overall UIC-assigners, and I've learned, by experience, what these guys deal with. You can accomplish a lot by golf-carts / ATVs / pedal-power, or (begrudgingly) on foot (if you have to). Avoid using cars, if at all possible. As soon as cars are involved, your umpires' participation will unravel. 1 Quote
