Depends.  Personally, I have found New Balance to be a bit narrow and Smittys to be a bit wide. I wear thin socks with one and double up with the other. YMMV.

I don’t have any issues with the length on either pair.

I had to order my NB plate shoes according to my Japan foot size (straight measurement of foot length in cm). I ordered my US size in them and they were too small. I would echo @boyinr's comment they seem to have a narrow toe box; if that bothers you, I suggest adding 1/2 a size (or a cm in Japanese sizing).

Concur.  Have found NB 4E nowhere near 4E.  Way narrower.

A little late to this I know, but I wear NB in a regular 10.5 or 11.0, depending on the model, for regular cross trainers, but for my New Balance plate shoes I do an 11 4E - the other sizes were just too tight for me. Part of it may have been that I was new to umping, but I've been doing it for 4 years now, including about 500 plates, and still like that size.
