I was surprised to see Culbreth retire.  Always thought of him as one of the "younger" veteran umpires.

just guessing,

other than just outright retiring because you want to retire, each CBA is different, and may affect decisions for each umpire considering their individual retirement decision.

FRA could come into play.

another could be how the umpires physical evaluations go each year (which i believe are at the end of January,) so if a quick scope surgery/etc is needed, they can get back in time for opening day, or see a significant amount of time during that current season. just like our own doctors, some decisions have to be made and a doctor just may not feel comfortable signing off physically on an umpire to continue working due to their overall health.

who was that hockey player who had so many concussions that the doctor refused to sign off for him to play due to the amount of concussions and the severity of those concussions during the years. you might just have something like that happen from time to time. so no medical sign-off for continuing employment, equals no more worky, equal retirement.
