Watching the video, I thought safe, as he did not deviate more than 3 foot at the time of the attempted tag. However, reading the multiple choice answers, I thought it was obvious they wanted "d" as the correct answer.

I also thought about generating discussion on this one.  I think calling the runner out would be grabbing the shi**y end of the stick.  How can you call a runner out for running out of the way of a fielder who is fumbling a ball (and never does field it cleanly and make a tag attempt)?

I thought R2 went more then 3' out of his path to avoid a tag.  At the :34 mark R2's left foot can be seen between F5's feet in the angle shot from behind F5. Less than a second later, with F5 stationary, R2's left foot is about 4' to the right of F5.

In trying to avoid a tag, R2 deviates more than 3' from a direct line toward 3B. I would sell it harder than usual because F5 dropped the ball, but I would not be concerned about making that call.

My .02.

The fielder never caught the ball, so there never was any tag attempt for the runner to try and avoid. The runner cannot be out of the baseline in an attempt to avoid a tag when no tag could be attempted.

That's my thought. Otherwise any feint is an attempt.
