In transitioning back to a traditional mask (Force 3), I was exploring ways to protect my neck.  One thing that stuck out to me was the newer hockey style throat protectors.  Since some guys are gravitating to mock turtle necks any way, this one wouldn't look too far out of the ordinary.  An additional feature of this one is D30 foam in the impact zone.  It provides protection for the larnyx and carotid artery.  I wonder if this provides better protection than a dangling throat protector.  Here's the link.  I think it's interesting.

Aren't these made more for cut protection and not for impact protection?

Yes , the neck guard is to prevent a skate from cutting your throat literally.  They do make throat guards for the hockey masks though for the same purpose we do.

Good point.  I looked at a review and saw that the D30 was for impact protection as well.  I figured, "if it can stop a puck, it can stop a baseball".  Kinda like, "if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball."  However, avoiding the impact all together is likely more beneficial than dissipating it.

It certainly would be better than nothing, but I don't know if it would kill enough impact to still not hurt you.

Anyone up for testing? :smachhead:

No need for voluntary testing. Ask our resident Hockey Goalie Geek @Razzer... he has decades between the pipes to go off of. I spent nowhere near the same time as a goalie, but I did face down pucks for a few seasons of intramural hockey. I disliked the “plow”, in much the same way I dislike the dangling throat guard in baseball.

The bib collar is for slash protection primarily, impact protection secondary. Would it work for you in a baseball application? Sure. The likelihood of a PU taking a direct pitch to the throat is slim-to-none. A foul-off, ricocheting off the catcher, or the plate, or a HBP glancing off to find that one vulnerable spot is much more plausible. So, is this bib collar overkill? Probably... since it’s a turtleneck collar, do you want to feel, in the words of the dearly missed Mitch Hedberg, “like a weak midget is trying to strangle you” all game?

I concede, conventional “shoehorn” throat guards are cheap and hideously bland, but this bib collar, at $30+ isn’t the remedy we need it to be.

Max nailed it

Great idea for Canadian Fall Ball...lol

The clear dangler will also shatter just like Plexi Glass when a puck hits at the perfect angle

You also are stationary when umpiring and just the sound of getting hit would scare the life out of you.

As for the bib....they do not work for protection...more for skate cuts and they are hot as hell
