The common tater's remarks were actually interesting for once.

Rather than merely articulating the idiotic player view that umpires can't judge both a pitch and a swing at once, he reported his experience at umpire school. There, he learned that the rule book does not define a swing. Umpires have various benchmarks that they might use from 1B to judge a swing, but those aren't available to the PU.

I did not hear him assert a conclusion to this line of argument, but it seems to be that U1 should rule on check swings (just as the players want).

The fallacy stems from the false assumption that, without a definition, the only umpire who can properly rule on check swings is the one with the benchmarks.

Until, and if, MLB comes up with some kind of basic guidelines as to what does and does not constitute an offer, vs being purely based on judgement, these arguments will always happen.
