How many associations have set 3-man crews that work games together during the regular season so that they are ready for post season?

Or homie many associations just rotate people around?

We have about 12 guys that are used in 3-man crews throughout the regular season, and we average about 15 three-man games in the regular season.

When post-season rolls around, we use the top 6 or 9 depending on how many playoff games we're covering that day (usually 2 to 3 games).

So while they're not set 3-man crews, you're going to work post-season games with guys you've worked regular-season 3-man crews already.

Regular season 3-man crews....I wish. I'd love to get some experience with 3-man crews, but my schedule and experience excludes me from college ball. Not much else around here for 3man.

Our regular games are 2-man

District games 3-man

Then we go into playoffs 3-man

Our 3man for state playoffs start in round 3 I believe. Hard to break into that group that gets those games.

Florida now has a State Evaluation before the season starts.

Different associations each send a crew.

You get evaluated 1. If you can do Regionals 2. If you can do States Finals.

So you can get a

1. No-no

2. Yes- no

3. Yes-yes

I'm getting evaluated this year.

We have the opportunity to work about 100 3 man games this season during the season. Included in that is a couple of 4 man tournament final games. Our playoff games are 3 man up to the semi finals then it is 4 man

Are the schools paying full fees?

We do 2-man in the regular season, and 4-man for playoffs in HS.

We do 3-man for some of the conferences in college, but they are not 'regular crews'. We also do 3-man for conference playoffs,

You all are lucky.

One association allows us to hop on a two man crew for free to get some 3 man experience.

The other does not allow a third umpire during regular season.

Both work three umpires for post season as well as some tournaments during the summer.

would the other allow it for a JV game? That'd be a great time to hop on, especially as some oddities are likely to occur.

We have an Association in Murfreesboro, TN that does quite a few regular season games with 3-man.

Mine does zero in the regular season. Most all postseason games are done with three man.

I think 3-man is the perfect compromise for high level Baseball programs who want to put on a presentation that's a cut above the norm, without getting into 4-man, which can be pretty boring in most games.

Order Of Priority (from Assignor's Vantage Point) for working our Postseason Association Games:

1)  Availability & Eagerness

2)  Communication Skills (on steroids)

3)  Reliability and Dependable car.

4)  Presentation (Grooming, uniform, shoes. etc)

5)  Assertive, yet calm demeanor in tight situations

6)  Overall Umpiring Ability

7)  Attendance at either a FED or College camp specifically to learn or sharpen 3-Man skills

8)  Flexibility:  Willingness to be changed, reassigned, bail out the Assignor, work plate at ANY time, etc.

As I read this list over, I may actually have Overall Umpiring Ability a bit high ...

Although this list would appear that our priorities are out of whack, it has been proven that the guys that

nail down the top five of this list also happen to take their book work and ongoing education the most seriously.

Each school here is required to pay for three, three man games during the regular season (full fees for each guy). We rotate guys around so we work with almost every varsity umpire in a three man.

For playoffs:

Play-in - 3 man

Quarterfinal - 3 man required. But all the schools want and pay for the 4 man system

Semifinal and finals - 4 man

No evaluation process? No rating system? It is all up to the assigner, and is not given any guidance from the board?

I'd say we are evaluated by the number of complaints not received by coaches and partners, the number of times we are available at a moment's notice (well, let's say 2-3 hours' notice), and our general attitude with the Assignor, officers, and at meetings.

No tangible rating system.

There may be some guidance from the board for big rivalry games and State Tournament selections, but the Assignor has about 45 years of experience in this area, and the board members have anywhere from 10 to 15 on average.

I realize it's quite a joke, but somehow the cream usually rises to the top anyway.

We do 3 man a few times during the season! However, that said in the tournaments that I work for Travel Ball it is usually 3 Man Crews!
