Did first game behind the plate today for Youth League. Not sure if I'll be able to walk up/down the stairs at my building tomorrow. Getting out of the car was tough after the drive home. Bending down to get in my Lazy Boy recliner was an adventure.

I stretched a little before the game in the parking lot and at home while watching TV. Took some calcium. Drank a lot of water. Will do some heat before bed. Not sure if ice will help.

Not scheduled again behind the plate until Saturday. But, have a middle school Flag Football game on Thursday.

Any suggestions?

Retire.....:smachhead:

You can't possibly be that sore that fast...if so give it up.

Sounds like you need some conditioning....Start with your core and work from there....run some stairs if you can and work on your legs (hammy and quads).

Also, check your timing, make sure you are not squatting to early, get into your stance as the pitchers starts his delivery...this may help.

Scopes must be a youngster....

As we age, we become more susceptable to injury and soreness and it falls on us to do more preseason conditioning....My real job consists of a lot of 10 hours days in front of a computer sitting at the desk, so if I would jump up tonight and do a plate game without having put in a few weeks in the gym, I'd be in the same boat....

If you cant maintain a regular gym program, (I always try 3 days a week and am happy if I get 2.....)...then definately you should get in the gym no later than Feb 1.....Im not saying you need to do any hardcore routine, but some simple cardio coupled with weight lifting, will do wonders for your recouperative powers...

Other than that........I guess you can grin and bear it.......and self medicate....

LOL,

I am no youngster...40 years old..LOL

But I am a huge advocator of conditioning. I still work out and play softball in between umpiring. I also keep up a full time conditioning program ( cardio & weight training). I will never be out hustled by anyone on the field when umpiring. So...get in shape:violin:

Scobes: Dude, lighten up. He came asking for advice on healing his pain. He probably already knows he shoulda, woulda, coulda gotten in better shape before he started the season.

Winnetka: R-I-C-E! Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevation.

I recommend Ice and stretching. compression during your next outing or other activities until the soreness goes away. A little exertion, no matter how much it hurts-unless you have an injury to a joint or torn muscle, is a good thing. Get a little lactic acid going through those muscles and stretch at least 10 minutes before and after the activity/daily (even if it hurts).

Then follow Scobes' callous (tough love?) advice and get a conditioning program going.

My two cents. Your mileage may vary.

This is why I like doing scrimages like we do. We send three to five umpires to a scrimmage and do a couple of innings plate and bases a piece so we get back into the swing of things and not kill our bodies in the process. My first plate is tommorow afternoon. It should have been Monday but rained out. I will have three this week and at least one next week. As the senior guy, I get to decide how much each does.

wasn't being angry..just offering up advise that will last him a lifetime if he keeps up with it. I would still make sure that you are not squatting to early..it will kill you. :smachhead:

Oh..and I agree with the

Well For legs I do 50 to 100 squats a day for 3 days. Then I take 1 or 2 days off.

That helps me when I have to do four 3 hour games. I get exhausted but my legs are fine.

The first few weeks are the roughest. Even if you did condition well (which I said I was going to do but really didn't) the actual umpiring will be a different story. After my games Sunday my thighs and back of my knees were sore, my left ankle was unusually sore/painful (a new pain for me), and the arches of my feet were also unusually sore. My back was fine. I think once I get out there for a while things will feel better, but I'll keep paying attention to my ankle, that one is unusual for me.

I got a last minute switch to another field and instead of working two innings behind the plate, I got the whole game. :P I'm not as sore as I thought I would be. Now they are calling for snow tommorrow. :banghead:

I worked Thursday night, got sleet and some little snow flurries on Friday and then worked a varsity scrimmage on Saturday and used long sleve shirt.
