Fun with BOO, DH, EH

[FleasOf1000Camels]

15u, FED rules with some modifications, including allowing up to 2 extra hitters. Flex field that can play 80' or 90' bases, traditional dirt/grass except for full size portable mound...pitchers can NOT wear metal spikes...that's why manager has chosen to use DH for pitcher.

Lineup card as presented at plate meeting (names have been changed to protect the innocent):

1. Adams CF

2. Baker SS

3. Carlos DH, Charlie P

4. Davis 1B

5. Edwards LF

6. Franklin 3B

7. Gregory RF

8. Henry 2B

9. Issac C

10. Jacobs EH

SUBS: Keller and Leroy

No issues through first 4 innings, except that moron manager kept coming to me every inning to report position changes as his EH was rotating through various defensive positions.  I told him 3x "Skip, there's no need to report defensive changes, only changes that effect the batting order" Between 4th and 5th inning he's out to see me again with his lineup card. 

OC: "Charlie is moving from pitcher to RF, Gregory is going to the bench and Keller will come off the bench to pitch." 

Me:  "Again, I don't care who goes where on defense, so what I'm hearing you say is that Keller is subbing for Gregory in the 7 hole, right?"

LONG PAUSE

OC: "Well, kind of, except Keller is going to pitch and Charlie is going to right."

Me: (to myself) whatever, this guy's an idiot.

Top of the 6th, idiot's team is at bat.  1 out, #7 spot is due up, but Carlos actually hits.  Nobody notices.  Carlos reaches 2nd on F6's throwing error.  Henry (#8 hole) steps to plate and fouls off first pitch.  Defensive coach shouts for TIME from the dugout, and slowly approaches me with his scorebook.

DC: "Something's wrong here.  I think they have batted out of order."  I look at his book and my card, it shows Henry should be the batter....and Henry IS the batter.

Me: "Looks like Henry IS the correct hitter" 

DC: "But the guy on 2nd base is Carlos."

Me: (to runner on 2nd) "Turn around so I can see the back of your jersey" Yes, it's Carlos.

Me: (to offensive coach, who has now joined us at plate) "You know Carlos hit in the wrong place?"

OC: "No he didn't, he's DH for the pitcher."

Me: "No, he's DH for whoever else is in the #3 spot in the batting order, that's Charlie."

OC: "But Charlie's no longer pitching."

Me: "Nobody, including the DH can move from one spot to another in the batting order."  This goes back and forth several times.  I don't believe he EVER understood, but eventually he accepted it.

Both coaches, practically in unison: "OK, how do we fix this?"

Me; "Since it wasn't reported till after Henry received a pitch, Carlos' at-bat becomes official, and he stays where he is.  The proper batter is whoever follows Carlos...that would be Davis, right?"

OC: "What happens to the spots between them?"

Me: "They are simply skipped."

DC: "That doesn't seem fair, they get to skip their 8,9,10 hitters with a runner in scoring position and bring their clean-up hitter to the plate."

Me: "That's the way it works.  If you had reported it before that pitch to Henry, it would have been a whole different result."

DC: "Oh well.  Live and learn."

Me: "Davis assumes the 0-1 count from the improper batter."

OC: "Why's that?"

Me: "Because that's the way it is."

OC: "I still don't get it."

Me; "Let's just play ball."

Bottom of the 6th.  I notice that Carlos is now catching.  (If he had been at any other position, I doubt I'd have noticed him.)  I look out to RF and there is Charlie.  While pitcher is warming up, I go to talk with idiot coach.

ME: "Carlos was your DH, right?"

Idiot: "Yes, but now he's catching."

Me: *SIGH*, roll eyes,

Idiot: "You said I didn't need to report defensive changes."

Me: "Carlos is the DH, he can't play on defense, unless you want to eliminate the DH role, in which case Charlie would have to leave the game."

Idiot: "I was hoping to get Charlie an at-bat next inning."

Me: "Charlie and Carlos occupy ONE spot in the batting order.  They can't BOTH be on the field at the same time."

Idiot: "What do you want me to do?"

Me: (I've had it) "I'd LIKE you to learn the rules, but that's not likely to happen today.  Why don't you send your floating EH out to play right and put Charlie on the bench.  That leaves Carlos ALONE in the #3 hole, and you've got a clean, legal lineup."

Idiot: "But I wanted to get Charlie an at-bat next inning."

Me: "The time limit just expired, there's not going to be a 7th inning.  And since the home team is leading, this game is over."

It's pretty common for 15U coaches to NOT understand the FED DH rule.  And, given his earlier confusion on the subs, this is a good time to be sure he understands that Carlos is still batting for Charlie and that Keller is hitting for Gregory.  Could avoid the rest of the story.

I wasn't the PU, but we had a couple games where a pitching change would re-arrange almost everyone on the field. In one instance, F1 went to F5, F5 went to F7, F7 went to F5, F5 went to F7, F7 went back to F5 and F5 went to F1. Basically, F1 and F7 switched, and F5 ran around a bunch.

And absolutely nothing changed with the actual batting order... sounds pretty easy

Except the PU had to get this all up to the Press Box where the official scorekeeper was. Our PU also keeps track of these things as subs have to play 6 consecutive outs and bat at least once.

Right... and none of these moves changed that. The only needed change would be the F1 as pitch limits/innings would be a factor.
